Each of the more than 500 staff who work in the Office\r\nof the Attorney General are dedicated to serving all Delawareans with integrity\r\nand passion.\r\n\r\nDeputy Attorneys General, with critical\r\nsupport from criminal special investigators, victim service specialists,\r\nparaprofessionals, and administrative staff, prosecute criminal cases, enforce\r\nconsumer laws, provide counsel to state agencies, ensure the public's access to\r\nopen government, protect the abused, and much more.\r\n

The\r\nDelaware Department of Justice is seeking exceptional, highly motivated\r\nindividuals to join the Criminal Division as Legal Assistants in Sussex County.\r\n\r\nIf you are driven by purpose and ready to handle serious,\r\nimpactful cases, the Criminal Division offers a career unlike any other. In this role, Legal Assistants assist Deputy Attorneys\r\nGeneral in prosecuting serious and complex cases, including homicide, domestic\r\nviolence, special victims, and other violent crimes, while protecting the\r\ncommunities of Sussex County.\r\n\r\nIn Sussex County, the Criminal Division comprises several specialized units,\r\nincluding the Misdemeanor Trial Unit, Felony Trial Unit, Felony Screening Unit, Special Victims Unit,\r\nDomestic Violence Unit, Homicide Unit, and Violent Criminal Enterprise (VCE)\r\nUnit.\r\n\r\nResponsibilities\r\ninclude but are not limited to preparing and processing legal documents,\r\nmanaging and organizing case files and evidence, assisting with grand jury and\r\ntrial preparation, coordinating with police agencies, and maintaining\r\ncommunication with victims and witnesses throughout the litigation process, and\r\nwould be responsible for indictments and discovery for cases.\r\n\r\nThe\r\nideal candidate will be able to work effectively in a fast-paced environment,\r\nmanage competing priorities, and function both independently and\r\ncollaboratively as part of a team.\r\nStrong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to\r\nhandle a high-volume caseload are essential.\r\n
Essential Functions

Since class specifications are descriptive and not\r\nrestrictive, incumbents can complete job duties of similar kind not\r\nspecifically listed here.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n Acts in liaison capacity between superior and various\r\n interested parties and judicial and/or court staff, clients, defendants,\r\n plaintiffs, victims, witnesses, law enforcement agents, elected and/or\r\n appointed officials and the public to gather, clarify and provide\r\n information regarding case facts and status.\r\n Establishes and maintains case files ensuring that the files\r\n contain complete and accurate information essential to each step of the\r\n proceedings from pre-hearing and/or pre-trial through trial and\r\n sentencing.\r\n Interviews involved parties such as clients, defendants,\r\n plaintiffs, victims, witnesses, arresting officers, or medical personnel\r\n to gather discovery material, evidence for case preparation and to\r\n complete various legal and/or court documents.\r\n Reviews various reports as well as other information such as\r\n police reports, medical reports, retail, surveillance, computer\r\n files/electronic documents, body worn camera and video/audio; summarizes\r\n pertinent details of the case for Deputy Attorney Generals; follows up as\r\n necessary for additional documents; drafts answers to litigation\r\n complaints and responses to form 30 interrogatories; issue subpoenas to\r\n obtain medical, insurance, and employment records; serves and prepares\r\n discovery; and makes required redactions for discovery and case\r\n preparation.\r\n Reviews law sources such as case law, judicial decisions,\r\n statute law, codes, regulations, and legal and subject matter articles to\r\n ensure issues are properly cited and provides superior with written\r\n details of similar cases including findings, judicial decisions, and\r\n memorandum/opinions of law.\r\n Prepares legal pleadings, e.g. briefs, motions, indictments,\r\n information and appeals.\r\n Provides reports and recommendations for new/revised\r\n operating policies/procedures.\r\n Reviews state and federal codes, laws, rules, regulations,\r\n policies, and procedures to ensure compliance of legal\r\n actions/processes.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
