What You'll Do:
Performs responsible technical work in interpreting and enforcing the City's local codes ordinances - minimum housing, public nuisance, junked/abandoned vehicles, and zoning ordinances; does related work as required.
Essential Tasks & Responsibilities:
  • Interprets, enforces and educates the public on the City's Local Codes Ordinances
  • Deals with the public by receiving complaints and furnishing information pertaining to local codes - minimum housing, public nuisance, junked vehicles and zoning ordinances
  • Engaging in speaking with the community through proactive code enforcement
  • Investigates citizen complaints regarding possible minimum housing, public nuisance, junked vehicle and zoning violations by performing field inspections
  • Inspects development for compliance with any zoning and/or conditional use permit regulations prior to issuance of Certificates of Occupancy
  • Conducts systematic inspections of minimum housing, public nuisance, junked vehicles and zoning violations
  • Issues required notices of violations in accordance with North Carolina General Statutes, High Point's Code of Ordinances and Development Ordinance for minimum housing, public nuisance, junked vehicles and zoning ordinance
  • Takes necessary corrective action for securing voluntary compliance for local codes that are enforced by this division
  • Issues civil penalties for violations not corrected
  • Collaborate with other departments to ensure effective enforcement of City Code regulations.
  • Maintain daily records of all activities performed in Accela database
  • Ensures that all work performed is in accordance with OSHA and City Safety Standards and Policies

Qualifications:
Qualifications
Formal Education
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent required
  • Training and experience in code enforcement in the areas of construction, plumbing, electrical, mechanical or zoning is desirable.
  • Thorough understanding of local, state and federal safety regulations and OSHA
  • Valid North Carolina Driver's License

Preferred Qualifications
  • Level I Certification or higher in building, plumbing, mechanical or electrical issued by NC State Code Qualifications Board; or
  • Housing Code Certification issued by North Carolina Association of Housing Code Officials; or
  • Certified Zoning Official Certification issued by North Carolina Association of Zoning Officials

  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
  • Exposed to various weather conditions and temperatures, and various terrains.
  • Employee will regularly be inspecting the interior of occupied and unoccupied houses
  • Combining the type of work performed with the weather conditions, the worker should be one who can work outside in hot or cold environment
  • This position is best suited for someone who does not mind getting wet or dirty Hazards
  • Employee will be exposed to trash, garbage, weeds, brush and unlevel terrain.
  • At times inspector is subjected to inferior housing conditions
