Job description

Description The Code Inspector Trainee position is designed to provide entry-level candidates with the opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge required for a career in Electrical inspections within the City of Sunny Isles Beach Building Department. This role involves learning and assisting with various inspection-related duties under the supervision of certified inspectors, ensuring compliance with building codes, safety regulations, and city ordinances. Trainees will receive structured on-the-job training, supplemented by educational opportunities such as City and County training programs, technical workshops, certification courses, and skills development initiatives.

Responsibilities include supporting inspections, assisting with compliance enforcement efforts, and gaining familiarity with applicable regulations and procedures. This program offers individuals who do not yet meet the full requirements for a specific Electrical inspector role the opportunity to gain the necessary experience and training. Successful participants may become eligible for and transition into a permanent inspector position within the City of Sunny Isles Beach Building Department.

Position Scope: This is a varied specialized technical position responsible for enforcing the city ordinances while training to enforce the Florida Building Code. Illustrative Examples of Essential Duties This is not intended as a comprehensive list; it is intended to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities. Incumbent may be required to perform all duties listed, and may be required to perform additional, position-specific tasks.

This is technical and investigative work involving the enforcement of City ordinances while receiving training to perform inspections in the Electrical trades Under the general supervision of a Chief Inspector, the Building Official, or a high-level administrator, the individual in this position investigates violations of City ordinances, prepares case files, patrols designated areas, issues citations, and testifies at Special Magistrate Hearings, while also in training to perform the following work: Conduct inspections to ensure compliance with applicable codes and regulations. Observe construction progress at various stages to identify defects or violations that require correction. Review code standards and departmental regulations to ensure compliance.

Examine and verify blueprints, plans, complex calculations, and sketches associated with permits to ensure alignment with actual construction, alterations, or repairs. Collaborate with contractors, engineers, architects, property owners, and other stakeholders to answer questions and explain building codes and regulations. Prepare and maintain records of plans, plan reviews, inspections, correspondence, and reports related to building permits.

Attend meetings and conferences related to building code enforcement. Perform other related duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to identify code violations and recommend corrective actions.

Ability to read and interpret blueprints, plans, drawings, specifications, diagrams, etc. to determine conformance with established standards. Ability to read, understand, explain, and apply regulations.

Ability to make technical inspections and render valid decisions. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, agencies, and the public. Ability to use appropriate computer software in analysis, calculations, record keeping, etc.

Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. Ability to prepare clear and concise records, reports, correspondence, and other documentation. Ability to complete forms legibly and accurately.

Strong organizational and project management skills. Ability to report to work as directed during an emergency as an essential employee of the City of Sunny Isles Beach Excellent communication, public speaking, and writing skills, with the ability to engage stakeholders and the public. Physical ability to conduct field inspections, including walking, climbing, and working in various weather conditions.

Performs related work as required Minimum Requirements High school diploma or GED required. Coursework in building construction, engineering, architecture, or a related field is preferred. Completion of trade school, vocational training, or college-level courses in the Electrical, trade is a plus.

License and/or Certifications: Must possess a valid Florida Driver's License. Miami Dade County Certificate of Competency or State Contractor License preferred. Ability to obtain the following Florida Association of Code Enforcement (FACE) Level 1 Certifications within one year of date of employment.
