What is a cobol unix remote job?

A COBOL Unix Remote job involves working with COBOL, a legacy programming language, on Unix-based systems while performing duties remotely. Professionals in this role typically maintain, develop, and troubleshoot applications written in COBOL that run on Unix servers. These positions require knowledge of both COBOL and Unix environments, as well as the ability to work independently from a remote location. Common tasks include code maintenance, system upgrades, and ensuring the reliability of business-critical applications. Remote COBOL Unix jobs are often found in industries like banking, insurance, and government, where legacy systems are still widely used.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a cobol unix remote developer?

To thrive as a COBOL Unix Remote Developer, you need strong programming skills in COBOL, experience with Unix/Linux operating systems, and typically a background in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with mainframe integration, shell scripting, SQL databases, and version control systems like Git is often required. Excellent problem-solving abilities, self-motivation, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for remote collaboration and troubleshooting. These competencies are vital to ensure reliable maintenance, enhancement, and integration of legacy systems while working efficiently in a distributed environment.

What are some common challenges faced by remote cobol developers working in unix environments, and how can they be overcome?

Systems & Software, a division of Harris; is seeking a Software Engineer who will be placed into a small Agile Development team.

Your primary responsibilities in this role will include new feature implementation, troubleshooting bug fixes, new quotes, and supporting complex technical systems (where you will play an important role in helping design, build, test and deploy our products). We expect the same standard for AI-assisted code as anything else: you understand it and you can defend it in review.

This remote role welcomes candidates anywhere in Canada and the US. Travel is required as needed, approximately 1-2 times per year to Vermont/Customer Site/Some other destination such as AGM. Candidates must hold a current, valid passport and be legally eligible to travel internationally. This includes either passport based visa exemption or possession of any required travel visas for entry into Canada, the United States, and the Caribbean.

Salary:

  • Produce accurate effort estimates for large- and small-scale tasks, and work with the Client Development Manager to track development progress and timelines
  • Complete software development tasks - bug fixes, customer-driven feature development, product enhancements
  • Write and maintain automated tests (unit, integration, and regression) as part of feature delivery, not as an afterthought
  • Expand automated test coverage in existing and legacy areas of the product to reduce manual regression effort
  • Contribute to CI/CD pipelines, build automation, and shift-left quality practices
  • Use AI-assisted development tools to accelerate implementation, code comprehension, and code review, and share what works with your team
  • Collaborate with the R&D team on development methodology, processes, and associated tools
  • Work with QA, promote best practices to ensure a high level of quality within the team
  • Manage code reviews and closely participate in providing feedback on others' designs/code
  • Identify and mitigate issues and risks that could negatively impact project timelines

  • Proven Unix/Linux knowledge/background
  • Experience working directly with clients and Third-Party vendors on system integrations
  • Having effectively worked with all levels of management
  • Experience with cloud-based architectures

What we can offer:

  • 3 weeks' vacation and 5 personal days
  • Comprehensive Medical, Dental, and Vision benefits starting from your first day of employment
  • Employee stock ownership and RRSP/401k matching programs
