A co-pilot is a first officer in a flight crew that works to assist the captain in safely navigating the plane. In this career, your job duties begin well before departure and include conducting pre-flight weather briefings, preparing the cabin for radio communications, and setting up other equipment. You also share piloting responsibilities with the captain, so you need the skills necessary for flying a commercial aircraft. If something happens to the ranking captain, whether they become ill, incapacitated, or need a scheduled break, you take command and fly the plane.
A Co-Pilot, also known as the First Officer, assists the Captain in operating an aircraft safely and efficiently. They help with navigation, communication, monitoring flight systems, and responding to emergencies. Co-Pilots also handle pre-flight and post-flight inspections to ensure compliance with aviation regulations. They gain experience to eventually qualify as a Captain. The role requires extensive training, certification, and strong situational awareness.
As a Co Pilot, your daily responsibilities include assisting the captain with pre-flight inspections, flight planning, and safely operating the aircraft during all phases of flight. You’ll monitor flight systems, communicate with air traffic control, and help manage navigation and weather updates. Co Pilots also play an essential role in maintaining checklists, ensuring compliance with safety procedures, and supporting smooth communication between the captain and cabin crew. This teamwork is vital to delivering safe and efficient flights, while also providing valuable experience for career advancement to captain roles.
To thrive as a Co Pilot, you need a solid understanding of aeronautical principles, flight operations, and navigation, generally supported by a commercial pilot’s license and appropriate flight hours. Expertise with cockpit instrumentation, flight management systems, and aviation communication devices is typically required, along with passing rigorous simulator and skills assessments. Strong situational awareness, decision-making abilities, and effective teamwork are standout soft skills for this position. These competencies are crucial to ensure safe, efficient flights and seamless collaboration with the pilot and crew.
