Position Description
JOB PURPOSE
The Great Lakes Construction Co. is a heavy civil construction company headquartered in Hinckley, Ohio. The Estimating Co Op role provides the opportunity to move beyond the classroom and into the technical and strategic side of heavy civil construction while supporting experienced estimators in their day-to-day work. In this position, you will assist with reviewing project plans and specifications, performing quantity takeoffs, organizing bid documents, helping develop cost estimates for complex infrastructure projects, engaging with premier subcontractors and vendors, and participating in bid reviews.
You will work closely with the estimating team to support preconstruction efforts, contribute to planning discussions, and help coordinate information from subcontractors and suppliers. You may also have opportunities to visit jobsites to better understand field conditions and how they influence scope, pricing, and overall project execution. Through this hands-on support, you will gain exposure to the full estimating process from early concept through bid submission while building practical knowledge and confidence.
The ideal candidate for this role is a self-motivated individual who takes initiative and is eager to contribute while learning from experienced estimators. They have a genuine interest in performing calculations, developing cost estimates, and supporting the preparation of accurate and competitive bids. DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Promotes and upholds company standards related to safety, quality, efficiency, and core values
  • Assists estimators with reviewing project plans, specifications, and bid documents
  • Performs quantity takeoffs and supports the development of accurate and detailed cost estimates
  • Helps organize and maintain bid packages, including subcontractor and supplier information
  • Assists in soliciting and compiling pricing from subcontractors and vendors
  • Supports the evaluation of bids and proposals for completeness, scope alignment, and competitiveness
  • Contributes to cost comparisons and evaluates alternative approaches to improve efficiency and cost effectiveness
  • Participates in preconstruction planning discussions and estimating team meetings and bid reviews
  • Assists with preparing estimate summaries, bid forms, and supporting documentation for submission
  • Coordinates with project teams to gather information and clarify scope requirements
  • May visit jobsites to better understand field conditions and how they impact estimating assumptions and pricing
  • Maintains organized documentation of takeoffs, pricing, and estimate revisions
  • Demonstrates initiative, intellectual curiosity, attention to detail, and a proactive approach to problem solving

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Education
  • Students in the process of obtaining a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering
  • Requirements/Competencies
    • Proficient written and verbal skills, attention to detail
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office products and computer-based applications
    • Proactive, self-motivating, problem solver
    • Knowledge of AutoCAD software
  • Valid Driver's License Required
POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK
This is a full-time temporary (seasonal) position, and the work week for employees is normally considered 40 hours Monday through Friday. Flexibility is required to support time-sensitive issues as they arise. However, greater emphasis is placed on meeting the responsibilities assigned to this position.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work is performed in a non-smoking office environment. The noise level in the work environment is typical of most office environments. The majority of the work schedule will be performed in the office with minimal travel required.
