CNC Punch Press Technician

Location: Newport News, VA
Job Type: Full-Time | Contract-to-Hire
Shifts Available: 1st Shift and 3rd Shift (schedule flexibility required)
Pay: Starting at $18.00/hour+ based on experience

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced CNC Punch Press Technician to support sheet metal manufacturing operations. This role is responsible for setting up and operating CNC punching equipment, preparing tooling, verifying quality, and supporting efficient production processes.

The ideal candidate has experience working with CNC turret punch equipment, interpreting fabrication drawings, and maintaining high standards of quality and productivity.

Key Responsibilities
Equipment Setup & Operation
  • Set up and operate CNC punching and fabrication equipment.
  • Load and verify production programs before running jobs.
  • Prepare and position raw materials for processing.
  • Install and adjust punches, dies, and forming tools as required.
  • Monitor machine performance and make operational adjustments when necessary.
Production Support
  • Review blueprints, work orders, and fabrication drawings to ensure accurate production.
  • Optimize material usage and machine efficiency to support production goals.
  • Troubleshoot issues related to tooling, machine performance, and material processing.
  • Adjust machine settings to maintain dimensional accuracy and product quality.
  • Support production schedules by prioritizing work and maintaining workflow.
Quality & Documentation
  • Perform inspections using calipers and other precision measuring equipment.
  • Verify completed parts meet dimensional and quality specifications.
  • Maintain production records, setup information, and inspection documentation.
  • Work closely with engineering, fabrication, and operations teams to resolve production issues and improve processes.
Qualifications
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience operating CNC turret punch equipment in a manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and fabrication specifications.
  • Experience processing galvanized steel, stainless steel, and aluminum materials.
  • Proficiency using measuring tools and performing quality inspections.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
  • Knowledge of shop math, including geometry and trigonometry.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively in a production environment.
Preferred Experience
  • Experience editing or modifying G-code programs.
  • Familiarity with CAD/CAM software used in manufacturing.
  • Forklift operating experience or certification.
  • Exposure to production planning, manufacturing coordination, or process improvement activities.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stand, bend, squat, and perform physical activities throughout the shift.
  • Comfortable working in a manufacturing environment with varying temperatures.
Equipment Experience Preferred
  • Experience with CNC turret punch presses, punch/laser combination systems, or similar sheet metal fabrication equipment is highly desirable.
