What are some common challenges CNC Router Machine Operators face when working with new materials or designs?

CNC Router Machine Operators often encounter challenges when working with unfamiliar materials or intricate designs, such as adjusting machine settings for optimal cutting speed and tool selection. Each material—like wood, plastic, or metal—can require different feeds, speeds, and cutting techniques to avoid tool wear or material damage. Additionally, interpreting complex blueprints and ensuring tight tolerances can be demanding. Operators frequently collaborate with engineers or designers to clarify specifications and troubleshoot issues, which helps maintain quality and efficiency in production.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CNC Router Machine Operator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a CNC Router Machine Operator, you need strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and a high school diploma or technical certification in machining or manufacturing. Familiarity with CNC programming languages (such as G-code), CAD/CAM software, and experience operating CNC routers are typically required. Problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and a commitment to safety help operators stand out in this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for producing precise parts efficiently, minimizing errors, and ensuring a safe manufacturing environment.

Job description

Production Machine Operator — CNC, Laser & Vinyl (Day Shift)

PCL Graphics — Markham, ON Full-Time | Day Shift: 6:30 AM – 3:00 PM

About PCL Graphics

Since 1983, PCL Graphics has been an engineering house that happens to print. We design, fabricate, and produce large-format print and visual solutions for some of North America's most recognized retail, architectural, and signage brands. Our floor runs on precision — and precision starts with the people running the machines.

We're growing, and we're looking for a hands-on machine operator to join our day-shift production team.

The Role

You'll run a range of equipment across our cutting and fabrication department — including:

  • CNC router
  • Laser cutter
  • Summa vinyl cutter

This isn't a one-machine job. You'll move between platforms depending on the day's workload, so we're looking for someone who's comfortable learning new equipment and switching gears.

What You'll Do
  • Read and interpret job dockets — understand what you're making, the specs, and the end result before you start
  • Load sheets and substrates, set up the machine, and run clean, accurate cuts
  • Move finished work to the right station so the next step in the job keeps flowing
  • Keep a steady, productive pace — machines moving, you moving — without rushing into mistakes
  • Treat every docket with care so jobs come off the floor right the first time
  • Keep your area organized, safe, and ready for the next run
What We're Looking For
  • Technical and detail-oriented — you can read a docket, understand the job, and catch a problem before it becomes scrap
  • Reliable — you show up on time, every shift, ready to work
  • A good teammate — you communicate well, support the people around you, and keep the floor moving together
  • Steady and accurate under pace — fast enough to hit our numbers, careful enough to protect quality
  • Open-minded and eager to learn — cross-training across multiple machines is part of the job, and we'll invest in operators who want to grow
  • Experience in print, sign-making, fabrication, or CNC/cutting is an asset — but the right attitude and aptitude matter most
What We Offer
  • Stable, full-time day shift (6:30 AM – 3:00 PM) — your evenings are your own
  • Hands-on training across multiple machine platforms
  • Room to grow with a company that's expanding
  • A team that takes pride in doing the work right
How to Apply

If you take pride in precision, want to learn, and like the satisfaction of seeing a clean job come off the machine — we want to hear from you.
