Job description

Job Summary

The CNC Plasma Table Operator / Nesting Programmer is responsible for programming, nesting, setup, operation, and quality control of CNC plasma cutting equipment. This position converts customer drawings and production requirements into optimized nesting programs, operates the plasma table efficiently, and ensures cut parts meet dimensional and quality specifications while maximizing material utilization.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Programming & Nesting:

  • Create, modify, and optimize CNC plasma cutting programs using nesting software.
  • Import and interpret CAD files (DXF, DWG, STEP, etc.) and engineering drawings.
  • Develop efficient nesting layouts to maximize material yield and minimize scrap.
  • Select appropriate cutting parameters based on material type, thickness, and quality requirements.
  • Verify program accuracy prior to production runs.
  • Maintain and organize program files and revision controls.

Machine Operation:

  • Set up and operate CNC plasma cutting tables.
  • Load, position, and secure plate and sheet materials.
  • Perform machine calibration and torch height control verification.
  • Monitor cutting operations and make adjustments as required.
  • Identify and troubleshoot cutting quality issues such as dross, bevel, kerf variation, and dimensional inaccuracies.
  • Safely operate overhead cranes, forklifts, or material handling equipment as required.

Production Support:

  • Review work orders, blueprints, and production schedules.
  • Coordinate with engineering, production, and welding departments.
  • Ensure parts are properly identified, sorted, and staged for downstream operations.
  • Meet production goals while maintaining quality standards.
  • Assist with process improvements to increase throughput and material utilization.

Quality & Safety:

  • Perform first-piece and in-process inspections using measuring tools.
  • Verify parts meet dimensional tolerances and customer specifications.
  • Follow all company safety procedures and OSHA requirements.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area.
  • Complete production and quality documentation accurately.

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • 2+ years of experience operating CNC plasma cutting equipment.
  • Experience with nesting and CNC programming software.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, fabrication drawings, and work orders.
  • Understanding of metal fabrication processes and material characteristics.
  • Ability to use precision measuring instruments including tape measures, calipers, and squares.
  • Basic computer skills and familiarity with manufacturing software systems.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and stand for extended periods.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with software such as SigmaNEST, ProNest, Hypertherm ProNest, FastCAM, NestFab, or similar nesting systems.
  • Experience with structural steel, plate fabrication, or job shop manufacturing environments.
  • Forklift and overhead crane certification.
  • Knowledge of lean manufacturing principles.
  • CAD experience using AutoCAD, SolidWorks, DraftSight, or similar software.
