Job description

The CNC Manufacturing Engineer is responsible for developing, improving, and supporting machining processes across GLSV's CNC manufacturing operations. This is a hands-on engineering role focused on translating part requirements and engineering designs into capable, repeatable, and efficient machining processes.


The position will work closely with engineering, production, quality, and GLSV's machinists to determine how parts should be manufactured, including machining strategy, work holding, tooling, CNC programming, setup, inspection approach, and process documentation. The CNC Manufacturing Engineer will also provide technical support when machining problems arise and help develop the skills and capabilities of the machining team.


GLSV manufactures a diverse mix of prototype, low-volume, and production components rather than operating as a high-volume machine shop. The successful candidate must therefore be comfortable solving new manufacturing problems, developing processes for new parts, and continuously improving existing processes.


Responsibilities

  • Develop complete machining processes for new and existing parts, including operation sequence, work holding, tooling, cutting strategy, CNC programming, setup, and inspection considerations.
  • Develop, optimize, and maintain CNC programs using Mastercam for CNC mills, lathes, and multi-axis machining equipment.
  • Design or support the design and fabrication of fixtures, work holding, soft jaws, and other tooling needed to produce parts accurately and efficiently.
  • Determine appropriate cutting tools, feeds, speeds, toolpaths, and machining parameters based on part geometry, material, tolerances, machine capability, and production requirements.
  • Perform or support machine setup, program prove-out, first-piece production, and transition of developed processes into repeatable production.
  • Troubleshoot machining problems including dimensional variation, tool wear or failure, chatter, poor surface finish, work holding problems, programming issues, and other causes of lost production time or poor quality.
  • Work directly with machinists to solve production problems and improve machining methods, setups, cycle times, quality, and process reliability.
  • Support prototype and low-volume machining where manufacturing methods may need to be developed quickly from engineering models and drawings.
  • Develop machining approaches that can be reliably repeated by production machinists rather than relying on individual operator knowledge.
  • Document machining processes, setups, tooling, programs, and lessons learned so successful processes become part of GLSV's institutional manufacturing knowledge.
  • Work with Design Engineering to provide manufacturability feedback and identify opportunities to improve part design, tolerancing, material selection, or manufacturing approach.
  • Work with Quality to interpret drawings, GD&T, inspection requirements, and control plans and ensure machining processes are capable of meeting product requirements.
  • Support root-cause investigation and corrective action for machining-related quality or production problems.
  • Identify and implement improvements in machining technology, tooling, programming methods, work holding, equipment utilization, and manufacturing practices.
  • Help develop machinists and less-experienced technical employees through hands-on coaching in machining fundamentals, setup, tooling, programming, troubleshooting, and process development.
  • Support continuous improvement and equipment or technology implementation projects related to GLSV's machining capability.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated hands-on experience developing CNC machining processes in a manufacturing environment.
  • Strong knowledge of CNC milling and turning; experience with multi-axis machining is preferred.
  • Strong CNC programming skills, including G-code and CAM programming.
  • Experience with Mastercam strongly preferred.
  • Experience working from SolidWorks models, engineering drawings, and other CAD data.
  • Strong practical knowledge of cutting tools, speeds and feeds, work holding, fixturing, setup methods, and machining a variety of materials.
  • Ability to independently develop a machining process from an engineering drawing or model through successful first-piece production.
  • Working knowledge of GD&T and dimensional inspection methods.
  • Ability to diagnose machining problems systematically and develop practical solutions on the shop floor.
  • Experience with prototype, low-volume, high-mix, or defense-related manufacturing is preferred.
  • Experience designing fixtures and work holding is preferred.
  • Familiarity with Lean manufacturing, root-cause analysis, and continuous improvement methods.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively with machinists, engineers, quality personnel, and production leadership.


Education and Experience

An associate or bachelor's degree in manufacturing engineering, mechanical engineering, manufacturing technology, machining technology, or a related field is preferred. Equivalent combinations of technical education and substantial hands-on CNC machining, programming, and process-development experience will also be considered.
