What is a CNC lathe programmer operator?

CNC Lathe Programmer Operators are skilled professionals who set up, program, and operate computer numerical control (CNC) lathes to produce precise metal or plastic parts. They create and modify CNC programs based on technical drawings, select appropriate tooling, and monitor the machining process to ensure quality and accuracy. These operators are responsible for troubleshooting equipment, performing routine maintenance, and ensuring that the final products meet specified tolerances and quality standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CNC lathe programmer operator?

To thrive as a CNC Lathe Programmer Operator, you need a solid understanding of machining principles, blueprint reading, and experience with CNC programming—often supported by technical training or an associate's degree in manufacturing technology. Familiarity with CNC control systems like Fanuc or Haas, as well as CAD/CAM software and precision measuring tools, is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for ensuring accuracy and safety. These competencies are vital to produce high-quality parts efficiently, minimize errors, and maintain smooth production workflows.

What are some common challenges faced by CNC lathe programmer operators, and how can they be addressed?

CNC Lathe Programmer Operators often encounter challenges such as machine downtime, tool wear, and maintaining tight tolerances. These issues can be mitigated by performing regular preventive maintenance, properly selecting and inspecting cutting tools, and closely monitoring the machining process. As we continue to invest in advanced technologies, strengthen our capabilities, and expand into new opportunities, we are seeking skilled professionals who want to be part of a stable, forward-thinking organization committed to continuous improvement and long-term success.

Position Summary:

Under minimal supervision, the CNC Programmer will develop and optimize programs for CNC lathe machining centers to enable efficient and cost-effective manufacturing in alignment with production plans and quality standards. This role directly supports our commitment to doing it right the first time and continuously improving our processes.

Our Commitment to Quality:We commit to:
  • Doing it right the first time — through skill, discipline, and accountability.
  • Working as partners — understanding our customers’ goals and cooperatively solving their manufacturing needs.
  • Improving continuously — using data, teamwork, and innovation to raise our standards.
  • Protecting data integrity — because accurate information is the foundation of quality and performance.
  • Key Responsibilities:
  • Read and interpret prints and solid models with precision and attention to detail.
  • Use CAD/CAM software to generate CNC programs from solid models.
  • Reduce setup times and improve machining efficiency through process optimization.
  • Select and properly apply inserts, fixtures, and tooling during program development.
  • Design and develop jigs and fixtures; generate setup sheets and maintain documentation.
  • Provide feedback and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Program new products in compliance with quality policies, specifications, and customer requirements.
  • Provide accurate machining time and cost estimates to support quoting.
  • Maintain and update part files to the latest revision level.
  • Generate and maintain Methods of Manufacturing (MOM) and Bills of Material (BOM) within the ERP system.
  • Collaborate crossfunctionally to release shop travelers outlining all manufacturing processes.
  • Provide Production and Quality departments with detailed handling, storage, packaging, preservation, and delivery instructions.
  • Work closely with machine shop supervisors to prioritize workload effectively.
  • This is a designated safety-sensitive position.

    Required Skills and Abilities:
  • Strong ability to read and interpret technical drawings and solid models.
  • Proficiency with CAD/CAM software (FeatureCAM, Esprit, or similar); experience with 3D surfacing and 4th axis preferred.
  • Experience with Mori Seiki and Haas lathe programming; live tooling and spindle transfers a plus.
  • Familiarity with FANUC controls preferred.
  • Solid knowledge of CNC tooling, speeds and feeds, and workholding solutions.
  • Understanding of GD&T and quality systems such as ISO9001 / AS9100.
  • Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Excel and Word.
  • Ability to perform shop math, geometry, and trigonometry.
  • Education and Experience:
  • 510 years of machining experience required.
  • 25 years of CNC programming experience and/or formal CAD/CAM training.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • CNC mill programming experience is a plus.
  • Why Join Abrams?
  • 60 years of proven stability and industry leadership
  • A culture rooted in Passion, Integrity, and Precision
  • Ongoing investment in technology and innovation
  • Commitment to continuous improvement and operational excellence
  • Opportunities for longterm career growth
  • A collaborative team environment where your contributions truly matter
