Job Title: CNC Machinist

Job Description

This role involves setting up, operating, and adjusting a wide range of conventional and CNC machines, including lathes, drill presses, grinders, and other precision equipment. You will perform custom machining in a clean, climate-controlled environment, writing and editing CNC programs, performing frequent changeovers, and ensuring high-quality parts through precise measurement and inspection.

Responsibilities

  • Set up, operate, and adjust CNC machines, lathes, drill presses, grinders, and other precision equipment to produce high-quality parts.
  • Perform a wide variety of CNC machine setups on 2- to 5-axis machines, including horizontals with tombstones, verticals with indexers, lathes, and a 5-axis Integrex.
  • Write and edit CNC programs as needed to meet production and quality requirements, including using G-code and G&M code.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings and blueprints to create parts that meet specifications and tolerances.
  • Perform custom machining work, including multiple machine changeovers per shift, adjusting setups and programs to accommodate different parts.
  • Use micrometers, calipers, and other precision measuring instruments to inspect and verify the quality and dimensions of parts.
  • Handle machine changeovers without assistance, applying a strong understanding of CNC machine logic and operations.
  • Post-edit CNC programs to fine-tune processes for optimal performance, including identifying and correcting errors in programs.
  • Set up jobs, run production, and perform in-process and final inspection of parts to ensure conformance to specifications.
  • Detect worn tools during production, replace tooling as appropriate, and adjust offsets or programs to maintain quality and efficiency.
  • Assist other manufacturing team members with machine setup and troubleshooting as needed.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to machining processes, tooling, and program performance to minimize downtime and scrap.

Essential Skills

  • Minimum of 4+ years of CNC machining experience or a CNC technical degree.
  • Proficiency in setting up and operating CNC machines, including 2- to 5-axis equipment such as horizontals, verticals, lathes, and Integrex machines.
  • Ability to write, edit, and troubleshoot CNC programs using G-code and G&M code.
  • Strong ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and specifications.
  • Hands-on experience performing frequent machine changeovers in a custom machining environment.
  • Proficient use of micrometers, calipers, and other precision measuring tools to inspect and verify part quality.
  • Solid understanding of CNC machine logic, including the ability to identify errors and fine-tune programs for optimal performance.
  • Capability to independently set up jobs, run production, and inspect parts with minimal supervision.
  • Experience detecting and replacing worn tools and adjusting tooling to maintain consistent quality.
  • High School Diploma or Trade School education in CNC or a related field (preferred).

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with CNC machines from manufacturers such as HAAS, MORI SEIKI, MAZAK, BRIDGEPORT, MITSUBISHI, and similar equipment.
  • Familiarity with Mazak, Haas, and Fanuc controls and related CNC control systems.
  • Comfort working with multi-axis machining operations, including horizontals with tombstones and vertical machines with indexers.
  • Experience in machining components such as power clamps and manual clamps or similar precision mechanical products.
  • Formal trade school training or a CNC-related technical program is preferred.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail in a custom machining environment.
  • Ability to collaborate with manufacturing team members on setups and process improvements.
