What is a CMA?

Certified Management Accountants (CMAs) are professionals who specialize in financial management and strategic business decision-making. They are certified by the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) after passing a rigorous exam and meeting education and experience requirements. CMAs analyze financial data, help organizations plan budgets, manage costs, and improve efficiency. They often work in corporate finance, accounting departments, or consulting roles, providing valuable insights for business growth and profitability.

What does a CMA do?

CMAs, or certified medical assistants, perform a variety of clinical and administrative support tasks for physicians and other supervising staff. You find CMAs in doctors' offices, hospitals, clinics, and other healthcare facilities. As a CMA, you may be responsible for clerical or administrative tasks, or you may have clinical job duties. Your specific tasks vary, depending on the facility. General responsibilities may include preparing exam rooms, collecting lab specimens, interviewing patients, providing medication or vaccinations, and assisting the doctor during exams. When not working directly with patients, you may answer phone calls, arrange referrals and hospital stays, and restock medical supplies. CMAs perform many of the same tasks as non-certified medical assistants, but their certification shows a level of mastery for the job.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Certified Medical Assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), you need knowledge of clinical procedures, medical terminology, and administrative tasks, typically supported by completion of an accredited medical assisting program and CMA certification. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR), scheduling software, and basic laboratory equipment is important for daily operations. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and effective communication make a CMA stand out in patient interactions and teamwork. These skills are crucial for ensuring efficient patient care, accurate documentation, and smooth clinic operations.

What are some common challenges CMAs face when balancing multiple clients or projects, and how can they effectively manage their workload?

Certified Management Accountants (CMAs) often juggle multiple clients, departments, or projects, which can lead to competing priorities and tight deadlines. A common challenge is maintaining accuracy and attention to detail while managing a high volume of tasks. Effective workload management typically involves prioritizing assignments, leveraging financial software for automation, and maintaining clear communication with stakeholders. Successful CMAs also set regular check-ins and use project management tools to monitor progress and address issues proactively.

What is the difference between Cma vs Medical Assistant?

Medical Assistants may or may not be certified, depending on their training and employer requirements. Both roles work in similar environments and perform overlapping duties, but certification distinguishes CMAs as having verified competencies.

What jobs can a certified medical assistant get?

A certified medical assistant (CMA) can work in various healthcare settings such as clinics, hospitals, and physicians' offices. Certified Medical Assistant - Concierge Primary Care

PrimaryMD

San Mateo, CA

$37 - $41/hr

Full-time

Re-posted 4 days ago

Job description

PrimaryMD is a next-generation concierge primary-care and precision-health practice serving high-performance professionals and families. We combine deep clinical expertise, advanced diagnostics, and compassionate, human-first care to deliver an unmatched member experience. Our San Mateo clinic is our flagship location, and we are expanding rapidly.

We are seeking an exceptional Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) to be the right hand to our Lead Physician in the San Francisco Bay Area. This person will play a critical role in delivering the "Human Advantage" - warm, anticipatory service combined with clinical excellence, operational precision, and true care coordination.

This is not a typical MA role. This is a high-touch, high-accountability, luxury-care environment where members expect excellence, professionalism, and genuine human connection.

What You'll Do

Clinical Support & Member Care
  • Serve as the primary clinical assistant to the Lead Physician during exams, consults, and follow-ups.

  • Perform high-quality phlebotomy (must be experienced and confident), including venipuncture for advanced panels like Boston Heart.

  • Collect, prepare, and process diagnostic samples (blood, urine, swabs) following strict protocols.

  • Maintain a pristine, organized, and patient-ready clinic environment at all times.

  • Assist with medication reconciliation, prior authorizations, refill coordination, and basic clinical documentation.

Member Experience & Relationship Building
  • Greet members with warmth, professionalism, and efficiency - embodying the PrimaryMD "Human Advantage."

  • Build trust and rapport with high-net-worth professionals, executives, and families.

  • Anticipate needs before they're stated - from a glass of water to ensuring a seamless visit flow.

  • Communicate clearly and confidently across in-person, phone, and digital channels.

Operations, Coordination & Tech
  • Assist with onboarding new members - scheduling, intake, medical record gathering, testing coordination.

  • Maintain impeccable documentation, inventory, and clinical supply management.

  • Support care coordinators and operations staff with follow-up tasks, referrals, and continuity of care.

  • Embrace technology: forms, task lists, software tools, automations, and internal workflows.

Who You Are
Professional, Skilled & Compassionate
  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) with active certification in California.

  • Strong phlebotomy skills and comfort with all aspects of sample collection.

  • 2+ years of experience in primary care, concierge medicine, urgent care, or a similarly fast-paced clinical setting.

A True People Person
  • Warm, empathetic, confident communicator.

  • Ability to build relationships and deliver a luxury-level member experience.

  • Naturally anticipatory - you notice details others miss.

Dependable, Accountable, and Driven
  • You take pride in doing things right the first time.

  • You show up - emotionally, mentally, and operationally.

  • You are hungry to learn, grow, and contribute as the company scales.

Tech-Savvy & Operationally Sharp
  • Comfortable with modern software, EHRs, and digital tools.

  • Quick to learn new systems and adopt structured workflows.

  • Organized, detail-oriented, and excellent at follow-through.

Why Join PrimaryMD?
  • Work directly with world-class physicians in a practice built on deep relationships, advanced diagnostics, and proactive care.

  • Be part of a high-growth, mission-driven healthcare company redefining preventative and longevity-focused primary care.

  • Build meaningful connections with members and truly impact their health trajectory.

  • Growth opportunities as we expand into NYC and LA.

  • A culture rooted in excellence, empathy, and innovation.
