What is a cloud security engineer?

Cloud Security Engineers are IT professionals who design, implement, and maintain secure cloud-based systems and services. They are responsible for protecting cloud infrastructure, applications, and data from cyber threats by developing security policies, monitoring for vulnerabilities, and responding to incidents. Their work ensures that organizations can safely leverage cloud technologies while complying with security standards and regulations. Cloud Security Engineers often collaborate with other IT teams to integrate security best practices into cloud deployments.

What are some common challenges cloud security engineers face when securing multi-cloud environments?

Cloud Security Engineers often encounter challenges related to managing consistent security policies across multiple cloud providers, each with its own tools and configurations. Ensuring data visibility, controlling access, and monitoring threats in a multi-cloud setup requires advanced knowledge of automation and security orchestration. Collaboration with development and operations teams is essential to address misconfigurations and integrate security best practices early in the deployment lifecycle. Staying updated with evolving cloud-native security solutions is also crucial to effectively mitigate emerging threats.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a cloud security engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Cloud Security Engineer, you need a strong understanding of cloud platforms (like AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud), networking, and cybersecurity principles, often backed by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as SIEM systems, encryption technologies, and certifications like AWS Certified Security or CISSP is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving skills, and effective communication help you anticipate threats and work collaboratively with development and operations teams. These abilities are crucial to ensure the security, compliance, and resilience of cloud-based infrastructure in dynamic IT environments.

Job description

Job Number: R0242438

Cloud Security Engineer The Opportunity

Everyone is trying to "harness the cloud," but not everyone knows how to secure it. As a security engineer, you know how to assess and implement requirements that ensure the safety of information systems and protect them against intentional or inadvertent access or destruction. What if you could use your cloud security skills to improve missionโ€‘critical applications for the Intelligence Community (IC)? We need you to help us develop cloudโ€‘based security architectures for some of the IC's most critical systems.

As a security engineer on our team, you'll evaluate and support the documentation, validation, assessment, and accreditation processes necessary to ensure IT systems meet the organization's IA and security requirements. You'll assist in defining the organization's desired state and risk thresholds and analyze actual state information to assess compliance. You'll work with leaders to advise on codifying strategic objectives into doctrine and procedures that can help meet defined objectives. You'll assist with evaluation of computer applications, software, or specialized utility programs to determine if software assurance best practices are followed. You'll recommend tools and capabilities based on your research of the current environment and knowledge of various onโ€‘premise, cloudโ€‘based, and hybrid resources to address security requirements. You will implement the cloud security architectures, tools, and processes that you helped to shape and define. Your technical experience will be vital as you work with IC clients to ensure standards are met with security requirements. This is an opportunity to use the latest cloud technologies as you look for ways to secure your customer's environment while collaborating with tomorrow's cloud security experts. This position is located in Reston, Virginia.

You Have
  • 5+ years of experience building and administering cloud environments, utilizing cloudโ€‘native functionality and COTS, GOTS, and openโ€‘source tools to meet objectives
  • Experience with developing and evaluating security documentation, including system security plans, contingency plans, security procedures, and continuity of operations plans
  • Experience with security architecture evaluations, guidance development, and troubleshooting
  • Experience with the Risk Management Framework (RMF)
  • Experience with working in an Agile development environment
  • Knowledge of infrastructureโ€‘asโ€‘code concepts such as Terraform, CloudFormation, or Bicep
  • Active TS/SCI clearance; willingness to take a polygraph exam
  • Associate's degree and 5+ years of experience supporting IT projects and activities, Bachelor's degree and 3+ years, or Master's degree and 1+ year
  • Ability to obtain a DoD 8570 IAT Level II Certification such as Security+, CCNAโ€‘Security, GSEC, SSCP, CySA+, GICSP, or CND within 30 days of start date
Nice If You Have
  • Experience with the software development life cycle (SDLC)
  • Experience with cloud technologies
  • Excellent team leadership, development, and client relationship skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Clearance

Applicants selected will be subject to a security investigation and may need to meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information; TS/SCI clearance is required.
