They work with cloud platforms like AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure to create systems that collect, process, store, and analyze large volumes of data. Their responsibilities include setting up data lakes and warehouses, ensuring data quality and security, and enabling data-driven applications. Cloud Data Engineers collaborate with data scientists, analysts, and other stakeholders to support business intelligence and analytics initiatives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a cloud data engineer?

To excel as a Cloud Data Engineer, you need strong expertise in data modeling, ETL processes, programming languages like Python or SQL, and a solid understanding of cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud, often supported by a relevant degree and cloud certifications. Familiarity with tools like Apache Spark, Hadoop, cloud storage systems, and data pipeline orchestration frameworks is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help you deliver scalable solutions and collaborate with cross-functional teams. These competencies are essential for building robust, secure, and efficient data infrastructure that supports business intelligence and analytics.

What are some common challenges a cloud data engineer faces when migrating data to the cloud?

Cloud Data Engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring data security and compliance during migration, optimizing data pipelines for cloud performance, and managing data integrity across distributed systems. They must work closely with cross-functional teams to minimize downtime and avoid data loss, and frequently address issues related to data format compatibility and legacy system integration. Staying up-to-date with evolving cloud technologies and best practices is also essential for successful data migration projects.

Job Description:
Parsons is looking for a hands-on Cloud Data Engineer to join our team supporting mission-critical cloud, data, and AI-enabling technology initiatives. This position is open to candidates at multiple experience levels, from mid-career to senior. You'll help design and support cloud-based data pipelines, APIs, and modern data platforms that power advanced analytics and automation for mission-focused programs.
This is an implementation-focused role - not a traditional architecture or systems engineering position. We need someone who enjoys building, integrating, and troubleshooting real working systems.
What You'll Do:
  • Design, build, test, and support cloud-based data engineering solutions
  • Develop and maintain ETL pipelines and data workflows
  • Integrate data sources, APIs, applications, and distributed cloud services
  • Build and support data processing pipelines, database applications, and data services
  • Handle data movement, transformation, validation, and operational readiness tasks
  • Develop or integrate RESTful APIs and data-driven applications as needed
  • Partner with cloud platform, engineering, and DevSecOps teams on deployment
  • Use Git-based version control and CI/CD tooling (GitLab CI/CD, Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or similar)
  • Participate in Agile ceremonies, code reviews, testing, debugging, and documentation
  • Support deployment, configuration, and troubleshooting in Linux and cloud environments
  • Document data flows, interfaces, dependencies, and technical decisions
  • Collaborate with mission, engineering, security, and stakeholder teams on practical implementation
  • Apply secure coding and automated testing best practices throughout development
  • Help safeguard sensitive, proprietary, CUI, or classified information as required
  • Work effectively within secure, government, or defense-oriented environments

What You'll Need:
  • Hands-on experience in data engineering, data integration, or software engineering
  • Experience building ETL pipelines and data processing workflows
  • Experience integrating APIs, applications, services, or databases
  • Proficiency in a modern programming language - Python, Java, or JavaScript/TypeScript
  • Working knowledge of cloud-native data platforms and services
  • Experience developing or troubleshooting in Linux-based environments
  • Familiarity with Git and collaborative source control workflows
  • Understanding of secure coding and software engineering best practices
  • Strong troubleshooting skills across pipelines, APIs, databases, and integrations
  • Solid analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
  • Ability to collaborate across engineering teams and adapt to shifting requirements
  • Ability to work within secure or mission-oriented environments

Nice to Have:
  • Hands-on experience with AWS cloud services
  • Experience with Databricks or similar cloud data platforms
  • Experience with GitLab CI/CD, Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or comparable CI/CD tools
  • Experience with relational and/or NoSQL databases
  • Experience with data modeling, large-scale processing, or streaming/event-driven architectures
  • Familiarity with Docker, Kubernetes, or other containerization tools
  • Exposure to DevOps/DevSecOps practices
  • Experience assessing software dependencies, licensing, or supply chain security
  • Background supporting federal, defense, intelligence, or other mission-driven organizations
  • AWS certification (Developer, Solutions Architect, Data Engineer, or DevOps Engineer)
  • Active or eligible security clearance, where applicable

Security Clearance Requirement:
An active Secret security clearance is required for this position.
