What is a Clojure job?

A Clojure job typically involves developing software applications using the Clojure programming language, a functional and Lisp-based language that runs on the JVM. Clojure developers work on tasks such as building web applications, backend services, data processing systems, and functional programming solutions. These jobs often require a strong understanding of functional programming principles, concurrency, and immutability. Many Clojure roles are in industries like finance, e-commerce, and SaaS, where reliability and scalability are important.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Clojure position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Clojure developer, you need a solid understanding of functional programming principles, experience with the Clojure language, and proficiency in software development best practices. Familiarity with development tools such as Leiningen, Git, and commonly used libraries or frameworks is important, and knowledge of the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) ecosystem is often required. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and a collaborative mindset help Clojure developers succeed in team-based, agile environments. These skills enable effective delivery of robust, maintainable solutions in complex and fast-paced software projects.

What are some common challenges faced by Clojure developers, and how can new hires prepare for them?

Clojure developers often work on complex systems where understanding and untangling legacy code or deeply functional codebases can be challenging, especially for those new to Lisp-like syntax or functional paradigms. New hires can prepare by practicing with open-source Clojure projects, learning idiomatic Clojure code styles, and becoming comfortable with REPL-driven development. Regular collaboration with more experienced team members and participating in code reviews also accelerates learning and acclimation to real-world workflows. Embracing a growth mindset and proactively seeking feedback will help new developers overcome hurdles and grow quickly in their roles.

Job description

At Amperity, we're an AI-first company helping the world's leading brands create personalized customer experiences that build loyalty and fuel growth. Our AI-powered Customer Data Cloud, built on multi-patented technology, enables more than 400 global brands, including Alaska Airlines, Wyndham Hotels & Resorts, and DICK'S Sporting Goods, to turn customer data into a competitive advantage.
We unlock the full value of customer data with simplicity and speed. AI is at the core of our platform and the way we work - from powering advanced identity resolution and predictive analytics to streamlining internal workflows and decision-making. It's not just a capability; it's part of our DNA.
Our team thrives on curiosity, collaboration, and transparency, fostering a culture where everyone can contribute, learn, and grow. We welcome talented individuals from diverse backgrounds to help us remove data bottlenecks, accelerate business impact, and push the boundaries of what AI can do for the world's most innovative companies.
With offices in Seattle, New York City, London, and Melbourne, you'll join a fast-growing team tackling critical challenges at the intersection of AI, data, and customer experience. Ready to make an impact? Let's talk.
The Role
The MAX team drives a critical part of the platform that intersects both product and infrastructure spaces. The products we manage allow users to gain valuable insights into their data and make important decisions from those insights in ways that no other platform can. An immense data warehouse and query stack that we oversee powers these capabilities, and it analyzes some of the largest datasets that our enterprise customers can throw at us. Our horizon includes building predictive analysis tools, real-time decisioning engines, and agentic toolchains. We are biased for action, value, and succeed together in a highly collaborative environment. We are bullish on leveraging AI coding tools, such as Codex and Claude to accelerate our engineering capabilities.
Interesting Problems
  • Own batching and real-time streaming systems that handle large amounts of structured customer, product, and event data.
  • Building full-stack experiences and toolsets to help users visualize their data, understand their customers, surface the most impactful insights, and take meaningful action based on those insights.
  • Integrate our services into the operating core of the businesses we serve.
  • Change how marketers use their customer data through unique and intuitive product experiences.
  • Build agentic tools for our customers to use, and an MCP to allow external AI tools to take advantage of the Amperity platform.
About You
  • 5+ years of experience working with large-scale data-oriented systems. Bonus if you have experience with Trino, Spark, Delta Lake, & Kubernetes.
  • Track record building, scaling, and managing production environments.
  • Excited about using functional languages (like Clojure!).
  • Passionate about building elegant user experiences on top of complex technologies.
  • Open-minded, collaborative, inclusive, and inspired by your customers' success.
  • Curious about using AI coding tools such as Claude and Codex to help accelerate your development.
Technologies We Use
  • Open source large-scale database engines such as Spark & Trino.
  • Microservices architecture using Clojure as the primary programming language.
  • A web stack based on ClojureScript and the React family of tools.
  • Cloud-first architecture using technologies like Terraform and Kubernetes in a multi-cloud platform.
  • Claude for development with various MCPs to increase its effectiveness.
