Job description
Position in this function is responsible for the management and oversight of the daily clinical operations in a service line. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: clinical leadership, clinical operations, patient and employee safety and satisfaction, quality care, fiscal management and personnel management. Partners and co-creates a dynamic and collaborative relationship and partnership with site chiefs. Ensures the continuity and advancement of systems, care model critical success factors and service standards.
Supervises RNs and LPNs and assures that they are practicing in accordance with legal parameters, guidelines, and standards for clinical care. Serves as a clinical nursing resource and clinical operations partner in the areas of quality improvement, regulatory compliance, safety and professional development for their designated sites/service areas. Addresses patient and staff issues in collaboration with operational partners.
The Clinical Nurse Manager positions are differentiated by the following critical components; this Clinical Nurse Manager II position:
- is an administrative position
- holds responsibilities over two or departments
- holds responsibility over an area of practice with a large number of direct reports or complex scope of clinical practice (high level disinfection, moderate sedation etc.)
Primary Responsibilities:
- PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT/STRATEGIC PLANNING/QUALITY AND SAFETY
- In collaborative partnership with the Operations leader, responsible for the optimal clinical and operational functioning of the Service Line. Shares responsibility for on-site leadership and coverage and serves as a decision maker and/or accountable person for issues requiring immediate response such as significant patient or safety events, clinical or environmental emergencies
- In collaboration with site chiefs, recommends and implements improvements to clinical practice and clinical operations. Identifies and leads opportunities to enhance clinical quality and service excellence; implements department and/or Service Line processes, strategies and tactics. Participates in the development of policies, protocols, guidelines and standard work documents in collaboration with leadership team
- Leads, supports and partners with site chiefs and service line leaders on clinical program, development and/or network development initiatives
- Utilizes data and analytic reports to identify and prioritize opportunities for practice improvement in collaboration with department staff, specifically Quality data saturation grid, Press Ganey results, and organizational HOSHIN metrics
- Assures clinical and patient safety; reviews and follows up on safety reports and site safety practices to identify trends and priorities. Owns the clinical responsibility and engages operational partner to ensure proper safety resources are in place. Takes appropriate action to address areas of concern and incorporates into daily practice and activities in compliance with appropriate regulatory environment. Recommends changes to processes to mitigate future events and spreads knowledge throughout the Service Line and/or organization
- In collaboration with Operations leader and service line leaders, ensures the appropriate handling of patient problems or complaints within Service Line. Reviews and monitors problem resolution processes and ensures appropriate resolution by subordinates
- Works as part of a management team that develops systems and procedures to correct problems relating to systems failures
- Communicating relevant clinical and operations information to senior management, service line leadership and staff. Collaborates with key stakeholders on nursing practices and general practice management. Advises senior management relating to issues specific to professional practices within the specialty
- Ensures that problems relating to clinical/non-clinical staff interface are appropriately investigated and resolved
- Participates in/ leads departmental, specialty, and/or nursing workgroups, committees, meetings and special projects to represent nursing and service line perspective
- Participates in the regional Administrator on Call (AOC) rotation
- Ensures infectious disease standards are met across the Service Line. Oversee process for employee onboarding health screenings and manage employee exposures (i.e. needle stick).
Responsible for organizing flu clinics (patient and employees) - Demonstrates effective conflict management skills with direct reports, colleagues, and patients/families
- Represents the department(s) at meetings and special task forces, as required
- Performs other duties as assigned
- HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGEMENT
- Carries out supervisory responsibilities within areas of responsibility in accordance with the organizations policies and applicable laws. Fosters an environment of inclusivity, respecting colleague and patient diversity
- Supervises one or more departments of clinical staff to include RNs and LPNs. Provides direction and support to staff to assure departmental effectiveness and efficiency
- Handles and manages staffing issues and coverage on a daily basis
- Include interviewing, selecting, creating a plan for orienting and training new employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; evaluating performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; reviewing personnel actions of subordinate supervisors; addressing complaints and resolving problems
- Recruits, orients and trains new employees in compliance with organizational standardization of onboarding; offers mentorship to new nurses. Facilitates and promotes opportunities for education and professional growth and development for nursing and medical assistant staff. Creates and fosters a positive work environment
- Responsible for annual competency selection, completion and validation for all clinical staff within reporting line, including identification of remediation needs and planning with central clinical education team
- Conducts staff performance reviews. Assists staff with SMART goal-setting and fosters continual professional development
- Manages nursing staff to ensure standards and scope of clinical practice are adhered to; provides direction and support to staff to ensure safety and practice efficiency. Independently resolves problems and/or recommends solutions to departmental issues
- Certifies that practice adheres to all collective bargaining contract provisions
- FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT
- Develops and administers all aspects of Service Line operations including participating in operating and capital budget preparation
- Oversees and implements cost saving measures as appropriate
- Collaborates with Director, Regional Operations and Executive Director, Service Line to establish annual site Service Line goals, metrics and performance management systems for the practice
- Accountable for recommending and managing site budgets for the designated functional areas
- Creates, analyzes and monitors labor and expense budget in relation to forecasting future needs
- Ensures sufficient trained staff are available within local budget
- Participates in request for hire process and advocates for resources in fiscally responsible manner
- Monitors performance to budget. Recommends adjustments to staffing patterns to reflect service needs and operational efficiency
- PERSONAL & PROFESSIONAL ACCOUNTABILITY
- Conducts oneself and holds others accountable in accordance with the ANA Code of Ethics for nursing and the principles of reflective leadership
- Assumes responsibility for one's own professional development and growth through career planning, self-assessment, and goal setting
- Demonstrates contributions to the profession through active participation in professional organizations, dissemination of work in the form of poster/podium presentations, and/or mentorship to internal/external aspiring nurse leaders

Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing
- Current RN license to practice professional nursing in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS)
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) may be required based on specialty
- Certification in practice specialty or leadership preferred with an expectation to sit for certification within 4 years of hire
- Proven ability to act cooperatively and collaboratively as a member of an interdisciplinary team
- Proven solid interpersonal, organizational and communication skills
- Demonstrated commitment to the principals of collaboration and teamwork
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree in nursing or healthcare related field
- 3+ years of demonstrated clinical experience and skill in relevant nursing area
- 2+ years of leadership experience
- Management/leadership experience in a nursing collective bargaining environment
- Working knowledge of organizational systems and operations

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). The salary for this role will range from $91,700 - $163,700 annually based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
