Incumbents in this position are responsible for integrating nursing knowledge and science with computer science and information systems for clinicians using the electronic medical records.

Responsibilities
  • Facilitates the integration of data, information and clinical knowledge to support patient care decision making.
  • Translates and communicates clinical needs to information technology staff and works to develop appropriate solutions.
  • Evaluates electronic solutions and develops implementation strategies to optimize software solutions.
  • Conducts workflow analysis and makes recommendations for change management strategies.
  • Conducts quality assurance testing prior to solution deployment to ensure functionality is working as designed.
  • Works with managers and clinicians to develop implementation plans to support the transition to the new work flow.
  • Provides support to clinicians during training, go-live and after go-live to ensure utilization of the solution is correct.
  • Collaborates with compliance, patient accounting, legal and other departments to communicate and translate details of the electronic record to support the business needs of these areas.
  • Conducts revenue enhancement activities in conjunction with coders to ensure electronic tools support new compliance rules. Monitors and reports outcomes of activities to hospital leaders.
  • Conducts hardware assessments on the inpatient nursing units and develops a plan for upgrades and replacements to ensure clinicians have appropriate tools to support their practice.
  • Coordinates with ITS and all departments to prepare for downtime situations.
  • Conducts audits.
  • Works with educators and managers to support and re-enforce staff training.
  • May perform direct patient care or other clinical functions within established protocol and physicians' orders, as required by the specific department and in alignment with documented competency pass off.
  • At the discretion of department operational and patient care needs, this position is required to work rotating schedules, which may include variable hours, weekends, nights, and holidays to meet the staffing and patient care demands of a 24/7 complex health system. Regular, reliable, and punctual attendance during assigned shifts is considered an essential function of the role.

  • Demonstrated ability to perform the essential functions as outlined above.
  • Demonstrated leadership, human relations, and effective communication skills.
  • Ability to integrate nursing knowledge and science with computer science and information systems.
  • Ability to collaborate with clinicians to develop real time reports that are needed to support clinical decisions.
  • Ability to develop written education material.
  • Ability to lead discussions with both small and large groups of people.
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem solving skills.

Qualifications
Qualifications
Required
  • Five years of experience in a relevant setting. Four of which must be in nursing.
  • Three years experience working with electronic health records.
Licenses Required
  • Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Utah, or obtain one within 90 days of hire under the interstate compact if switching residency to State of Utah. Must maintain current Interstate Compact (multi-state) license if residency is not being changed to Utah.
  • Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system. The eCredential is to be obtained within 30 days of hire.

Qualifications (Preferred)
Preferred
  • Degree or Certification in Informatics.
