Job Summary and Qualifications

The Assistant Vice President (AVP) of Clinical Documentation Integrity (CDI) will be responsible for the development, implementation, and maintenance of an operational and technology strategy for clinical documentation integrity across HCA. This includes leading a multi-disciplinary team in a shared service model for the development of CDI processes, policies, education and reporting to execute on strategies as defined by Case Management Services senior leadership.

This position will maintain relationships with key executives and leaders throughout HCA. The AVP of CDI will work collaboratively with key corporate departments, e.g., Case Management Services, Clinical Operations Group (COG), REGs, Internal Audit, group and division senior leadership, Parallon HIM, and ITG. This position will report to the xxx of Case Management Services.

The ideal candidate will be a strong leader, have proven management experience while having excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. The candidate will establish an environment that encourages information sharing, collaboration, and process improvement to ensure effectiveness, efficiency and service excellence. 

Core Responsibilities:

  • Provides leadership to identify, implement, and direct clinical documentation integrity activities that aligns with business goals and enterprise vision
  • Identifies improvement opportunities and facilitates process standardization to promote improved outcomes, maximize resource utilization, and improve organizational efficiencies
  • Disseminates information accurately and timely with multiple audiences; ensures that there are regularly scheduled communication sessions with group, division and facility CDI leadership and staff. Excellent interpersonal skills and can work effectively with senior organizational and physician leaders across a diversity of work styles and personalities.
  • Identifies improvement opportunities; develops, implements, monitors and revises CDI processes to facilitate compliance. Strong ability to delegate operational tasks and hold teams accountable for operational effectiveness.
  • Identifies and shares best demonstrated practices; stays abreast of current practice standards; shares with divisions and across company; facilitates standardization, as appropriate
  • Reviews existing policies and recommends revisions; assists with the development and subsequent implementation of new and/or revised policy and procedure; ensures compliance with all HCA policies and procedures
  • Provides regulatory and compliance updates and initiates/drives process changes to ensure compliance with regulations
  • Provides data analysis of identified clinical documentation integrity metrics; interpretation of data and the performance of causal analysis; and reports findings to appropriate corporate entities
  • Develops, implements and monitors action plans to address identified CDI deficiencies
  • Fosters communication and facilitates collaboration between CDI teams, Case Management Services, Internal Audit, Parallon, Regs, and other departments within HCA
  • Anticipates and proposes opportunities to improve current technology or identify new technology to enhance performance and productivity
  • Provide guidance and leadership in the evaluation, selection and maintenance of vendor relationships for clinical documentation integrity products/services
  • Manages, leads, and is accountable for CDI projects, including but not limited to. ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS maintenance, annual DRG changes, Quality/Core measure reporting, and physician education programs
  • Executes and ensure performance metrics and CDI goals are met by directing the activities of CDI professionals
  • May require travel - 50%
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree – Required
  • Preferably in Health Information Management/Coding
  • Master's degree with healthcare – Preferred
  • 10+ years of experience in a leadership role – Required
  • 7+ years of experience in CDI – Required
  • RN with current state licensure
