It typically involves a series of phases (Phase I-IV) of clinical trials, starting with small groups of volunteers and expanding to larger patient populations. The goal is to gather the data needed for regulatory approval and to ensure that new treatments provide benefits that outweigh their risks. Clinical development is a critical step in bringing new therapies from the laboratory to patients.
