Description

Data Scientist Associate University of Alabama at Birmingham

The position leads the administration and maintenance of data systems for the UAB Alzheimer's Disease Research Center (ADRC). Provides support for the analysis, design, estimating, development, documentation, testing, and implementation of new systems, as well as maintenance and support for programs within existing systems. Oversees data integrity, security, and lifecycle management across the Center. Serves as steward of shared assets, monitoring data-sharing activities and ensuring adherence to data use agreements. Works directly with partners to resolve data discrepancies, conflicts, and inappropriate use. May require development and use of various software packages and systems. Acts as a direct liaison with users, technical support, training, and operations personnel, and provides technical and administrative support to the division.

General Responsibilities
  • Produces solutions driven by exploratory data analysis from complex and high-dimensional datasets.
  • Uses a flexible, analytical approach to design, develop, and evaluate predictive models and algorithms that lead to optimal value extraction from the data.
  • Evaluates and implements novel approaches to address aims and milestones to multilayered datasets.
  • Generates and tests hypotheses and analyzes and interprets the results of experiments.
  • Assists in documentation and reporting of results
Additional Duties
  • Manage integration of multiple data streams into a unified operational database structure
  • Coordinate data assembly and process management for internal and external projects; ensure data quality, compliance, and analytical readiness
  • Maintain active oversight of partner engagement to monitor data utilization and ensure timely completion of reporting obligations e.g. participant registry management
  • Serve as liaison between ADRC Core leadership and DMSC staff on data resources and priorities
  • Translate data needs into specific actionable workflows, coordinating routine DMSC activities and deliverables
  • Organize DMSC meetings and promote knowledge development of data processes and best practices
  • Resolve inter-core data discrepancies; facilitate corrective actions to maintain data quality and integrity
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Preferred Education
  • Master's Degree in clinical informatics, health services administration, health IT, or related
Preferred Experience
  • Experience coordinating personnel across multiple teams and managing integration of multi-modal data across heterogeneous systems.
  • Strong communication and relationship management skills for engaging with Center staff, internal collaborators, and external partners.
  • Background in clinical data management emphasizing data integrity, regulatory compliance, and readiness for analysis of clinical research outcomes.
  • Skills: Strong communication, relationship management, conflict resolution, task delegation, and prioritization skills.
  • Familiarity with clinical electronic data entry systems, e.g. REDCap or abstracted equivalents (Google Forms)
  • Understanding of PHI handling, deidentification, and Good Clinical Practice Exposure to data pipelines and integration workflows; not necessarily strict coding ability

Salary Range: $77,640 - $126,170

Qualifications Education
  • Master's degree in a related field OR Bachelor's degree in related field and two (2) years of related experience.

Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.
