What is a Clinic RN?

Clinic RNs, or Registered Nurses working in a clinic setting, are healthcare professionals who provide patient care, administer medications, assist with procedures, and help coordinate patient treatment plans. They often work in outpatient facilities, physician offices, or specialty clinics, supporting physicians and other healthcare staff. Clinic RNs also conduct patient assessments, educate patients about health conditions, and help manage chronic illnesses. Their role is essential in ensuring the smooth operation of clinics and delivering high-quality patient care.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Clinic RN?

To thrive as a Clinic RN, you need a solid background in patient assessment, clinical procedures, and nursing principles, usually supported by an active RN license and relevant clinical experience. Familiarity with electronic medical records (EMRs), office-based diagnostic equipment, and immunization protocols is common in this role. Strong communication, organizational skills, and the ability to multitask in a busy outpatient environment set top performers apart. These abilities ensure efficient, patient-centered care and smooth clinic operations, directly impacting patient outcomes and satisfaction.

What are some common challenges Clinic RNs face in balancing patient care with administrative duties?

Clinic RNs often juggle direct patient care with administrative responsibilities such as documentation, scheduling follow-ups, and coordinating with insurance providers. Time management is crucial, as prioritizing patient needs while ensuring accurate records and compliance can be demanding, especially in busy clinics. Building strong communication skills and staying organized helps RNs manage these challenges effectively, while support from fellow nurses and administrative staff can also ease the workload.

Job description

Position Summary

A privately operated multi-site health clinic is seeking a highly motivated, self-directed Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) to serve as the primary clinical provider at the onsite clinic site in the West Alexander, PA area. The clinics exclusively serve employees and dependents of Alliance Coal and are designed to deliver accessible, high-quality primary and occupational health services in a remote setting.

This role offers a unique opportunity to practice relationship-based medicine in a low-volume setting while enjoying significant clinical autonomy, strong physician collaboration, and comprehensive back-office support. The successful candidate will value independent decision-making, personalized patient care, and becoming a trusted healthcare resource for a close-knit workforce.

This position offers a highly competitive salary and excellent benefits including company paid health, dental and life insurance, PTO and 401(k) plan. The successful applicant must live within a reasonable commuting distance of West Alexander, PA area. (Location is approximately 17 miles east of Wheeling, WV and 45 miles south of Pittsburg, PA.)

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive primary, acute, urgent, and occupational health care to covered employees and dependents
  • Perform and interpret diagnostic studies including phlebotomy/venipuncture and 12-lead EKG recording
  • Manage chronic disease conditions including hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, and musculoskeletal disorders common in an industrial workforce
  • Conduct occupational health evaluations, including fitness-for-duty assessments as applicable
  • Conduct annual wellness visits and preventive health screenings
  • Promote health education, lifestyle modification, and disease prevention initiatives
  • Support employer wellness and population health programs designed to improve workforce health outcomes
  • Perform minor procedures; suturing skills strongly preferred for this setting
  • Provide telemedicine cross-coverage for other clinic sites as needed
  • Coordinate referrals and specialist care in collaboration with physician support
  • Maintain accurate, timely clinical documentation in the electronic health record (EHR)
  • Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and employer health regulations
  • Communicate effectively with Clinic leadership, employer HR contacts, and back-office staff
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and reporting as directed by Clinic management.

Qualifications

Required

  • Current, unrestricted APRN license in Pennsylvania.
  • Active licensure is required at hire; multi-state (Compact) licensure may be required within 90 days of employment
  • Current DEA registration with prescriptive authority
  • Demonstrated ability to practice independently with minimal direct supervision
  • Competency in phlebotomy and 12-lead EKG acquisition and interpretation
  • Ability to connect effectively with an industrial workforce, establishing trust and rapport in a setting where patients may be reluctant healthcare consumers
  • Proficiency with electronic health record (EHR) systems
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel
  • National certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) or Adult-Gerontology Primary Care APRN (AGPCNP)

Preferred – All Applicants

  • Suturing and minor wound management experience
  • Occupational health or industrial medicine experience
  • DOT Medical Examiner certification (or willingness to obtain)
  • Experience in rural or remote healthcare settings

Work Environment

This position is based in a remote area of Southwestern PA, serving an industrial/coal mining workforce. Clinic sites are onsite at or near active coal company operations. The APRN or PA will function as the primary clinical staff member at the site and must be comfortable managing a broad scope of presentations independently while leveraging physician and back-office support infrastructure.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and sit for extended periods
  • Ability to perform clinical procedures and patient assessments
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally

Patient volumes are intentionally structured to allow for comprehensive visits (both scheduled and walk-in), proactive outreach, preventive care initiatives, occupational health activities, care coordination, and telemedicine support across the clinic network.

Candidates who thrive in independent, self-directed settings with capacity for thorough, relationship-based care are strongly encouraged to apply. Time between patient encounters is utilized for administrative functions and telemedicine cross-coverage of other clinic sites, keeping the role engaged and connected to the broader clinical community.

What We Offer

  • Competitive compensation package designed to attract experienced clinicians seeking a highly autonomous practice environment and exceptional work-life balance.
  • Generous benefit package including company-paid health insurance premiums
  • Excellent physician oversight from clinic’s medical leadership team
  • Comprehensive back-office administrative and operational support
  • Meaningful, mission-driven work serving an underserved industrial workforce
  • Supportive organizational culture with experienced healthcare leadership

Disclaimer:
Please note that the successful candidate for this position will be employed directly by Improve Health Clinics PLCC, not by Alliance Coal, LLC. Improve Health Clinic is an independent organization that provides healthcare services to Alliance Coal, LLC and its subsidiary companies. All terms and conditions of employment, including compensation, benefits, and employment policies, will be governed by Improve Health Clinic.
