Climbing Gear Rep information

What is a climbing gear rep?

A Climbing Gear Rep is a sales representative who promotes and sells climbing equipment to outdoor retailers, gyms, and other businesses. They build relationships with clients, provide product education, and ensure stores carry the latest gear. Reps often travel to visit accounts, attend trade shows, and conduct gear demonstrations. Strong communication skills and a passion for climbing are essential.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a climbing gear rep?

To excel as a Climbing Gear Rep, you need in-depth knowledge of climbing equipment, strong sales abilities, and familiarity with the outdoor retail market, often supported by previous experience in the industry. Proficiency with customer relationship management (CRM) tools, inventory tracking software, and possibly certifications like Climbing Wall Instructor (CWI) or gear-related training is beneficial. Strong interpersonal communication, problem-solving skills, and a passion for outdoor adventure make candidates stand out. These competencies help reps effectively educate customers, build strong client relationships, and drive sales in a competitive market.

What are some typical challenges faced by a climbing gear rep, and how can I prepare for them?

Climbing Gear Reps often face challenges such as keeping up with rapidly evolving gear technologies, educating diverse clients on technical product features, and meeting ambitious sales targets across a variety of retailers or regions. You may also encounter seasonal fluctuations in demand and the need to balance fieldwork—such as product demos or attending trade shows—with administrative responsibilities. Preparing by staying current with industry trends, developing strong organizational habits, and honing your public speaking and customer education skills will help you overcome these hurdles and thrive in the role.

Job description

3 Rocks Engineering & Surveying is seeking an experienced civil engineer to lead and grow our civil sector across Southeast Colorado. This is a leadership and business development role at its core — you'll set the direction for how civil engineering grows at 3 Rocks over the next decade, build and develop a strong team around you, and be the face of our civil practice in the market. It's ideal for a civil PE who is energized by leading a team and building relationships

WHAT YOU'LL DO
  • Sector Growth & Business Development:Own the growth strategy for 3 Rocks' civil sector — build client relationships, lead proposals, and represent the firm in the Colorado Springs/Front Range market and beyond.

  • Team Leadership:Lead, mentor, and develop a team of 7, including 3–4 direct reports, setting the standard for how our civil group operates and grows.

  • Strategic Planning:Partner with ownership on the civil sector's role in 3RE's 10-year growth plan, owning sector-level goals and performance.

GOTTA HAVE IT
  • Certification:Professional Engineering (PE) license in Civil Engineering, Colorado licensed (or the ability to obtain a Colorado license by comity within one month).

  • Experience:10+ years of civil engineering experience, with a demonstrated track record of leading teams and growing a book of business — not just executing projects.

  • Business Development:Proven success generating new work and building lasting client relationships.

  • Leadership:Experience managing, mentoring, and developing engineers and project managers.

  • Communication:Comfortable being the face of the sector — with clients, at industry events, and in the community.

BONUS POINTS
  • Colorado Springs Market:Existing relationships or project experience in the Colorado Springs/El Paso County area.

  • Land Development:Experience with residential/commercial site development and entitlements in Colorado.

  • Municipal/CDOT Experience:Public-sector or transportation project experience.

  • Interest in a long‑term leadership path within the firm as we grow.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
  • Salary:$130,000 – $160,000 base annual salary, based on experience, plus a performance‑based incentive tied to sector growth and new business generated — total compensation potential well beyond base for a leader who delivers on growth targets.

  • Profit Sharing:Participation in Company Profit Sharing.

  • Pre‑Tax Benefits:Section 125 cafeteria plan.

  • Insurance:Employer‑sponsored Health, Dental, and Vision insurance, plus Company‑paid Life Insurance.

  • Retirement:Retirement plan with Company Match.

  • Time Off:Vacation and Sick time (accruing immediately), Company‑paid Volunteer Time, Company‑paid maternity leave, plus paid parental leave for all employees through Colorado's FAMLI program.

  • Perks:Access to the "company garage" of outdoor gear — including our company raft, climbing gear, and mountain bike!

LOCATION
  • Colorado Springs
