Climate Startup information

What is a climate startup?

A climate startup is a company or organization focused on developing innovative solutions to address climate change and environmental challenges. These startups often work on technologies or business models that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, promote renewable energy, improve sustainability, or help communities adapt to changing climates. They can operate in areas such as clean energy, sustainable agriculture, carbon capture, waste management, and green transportation. Climate startups play a crucial role in driving climate action and advancing the transition to a low-carbon economy.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive at a climate startup?

To thrive at a climate startup, you generally need a strong background in environmental science, sustainability, or engineering, often backed by relevant degrees or experience in climate-related sectors. Familiarity with data analysis tools, project management software, and sustainability reporting frameworks such as GHG Protocol or Life Cycle Assessment is highly valued. Adaptability, innovative thinking, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for navigating the fast-paced and mission-driven environment typical of startups. These capabilities enable you to drive impactful solutions, collaborate across diverse teams, and respond quickly to the evolving challenges of the climate tech industry.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working at a climate startup?

Professionals at climate startups often encounter challenges such as rapidly shifting priorities due to evolving technology and regulatory landscapes, balancing ambitious environmental goals with limited resources, and navigating the uncertainties of a developing market. Team members frequently wear multiple hats, collaborating closely across disciplines like engineering, policy, and business development. This dynamic environment fosters innovation but also requires adaptability, strong communication skills, and a willingness to learn quickly.

Job description

Cambio is a software platform for world-class real estate decarbonization. We help commercial real estate owners and tenants bring their real estate portfolios to net-zero using a machine learning-driven, end-to-end real estate sustainability platform. Our mission is to take the real estate industry into the climate action era.
We are proud to be the fastest growing startup in our category, with world-class partners and investors including Y Combinator, Google, the U.S. Department of Energy, Stanford University and Fifth Wall. We are seeking team members who are passionate about building transformative products, enthusiastic about problem-solving, and excited to work at the forefront of climate and real estate technology. Join us on our mission to achieve net zero by 2050.
We're looking for a BizOps Associate to join our team and sit at the intersection of finance, operations, and cross-functional strategy. This is a broad role, part execution owner, part analytical contributor built for someone who wants to help build the operating muscle of a high-growth company. You'll take ownership of recurring workflows across Finance and BizOps, while also contributing to structured problem solving, financial modeling, and strategic projects. This is an opportunity to get broad exposure across product, engineering, GTM, and operations and to grow with the company as scope expands.
Finance & Rev Ops
  • Financial modeling and budgeting support
  • Market sizing and analytical support for strategic initiatives
  • Leading indicator tracking and surfacing insights to leadership
  • Support in pricing experimentation and definition
  • AR: Own mechanical collections, reconciliation, and cash application; escalate to leadership where judgment is required
  • AP: Manage vendor invoice review, approval routing, and reimbursement processing
  • Payroll-adjacent execution: Run monthly commissions against existing models, manage contractor and intern payments, and handle contractor invoice intake
  • Support HubSpot RevOps operations including dashboards, day-to-day changes, and data hygiene

BizOps
  • Drive analytical insights and build frameworks to evaluate company performance via data modeling (SQL proficiency or willingness to learn is a plus to help support data infrastructure)
  • Vendor and process management: Vendor sourcing, ongoing vendor management, procurement, legal and contracts, insurance renewals and broker coordination
  • Coordinate cross-functional execution across teams, including CS process improvements and operational projects
  • IT: Own provisioning, the onboarding/offboarding runbook, and day-to-day management of the IT channel
  • Compliance: Lead ISO 27001 / SOC 2 evidence gathering and own the renewal calendar

People Ops
  • Periodic programs: semi-annual performance reviews, quarterly pulse/engagement surveys, and efficiency metric tracking
  • Hiring coordination: offer letters, JustWorks onboarding, background checks, and onboarding/offboarding logistics

The Experience You Have:
  • 2-4 years of experience in a high-slope role (MBB or top-tier consulting, a strong operating role at a high-growth startup, or the consulting arms of a Big 4 firm)
  • Highly analytical and structured; comfortable building models and frameworks from scratch
  • Execution-oriented: you follow through, close loops, and take ownership without being asked twice
  • Comfortable with ambiguity and able to move fluidly across functions
  • Capable of building process and bringing order to messy, fast-moving workflows
  • Strong communicator who can translate between operational detail and strategic context

Requirements:
  • Must be authorized to work in the US
  • This role is hybrid and requires 2 days in our NYC or SF Office
  • Compensation: 120-140k USD
