The Opportunity
TECKpert is seeking a Senior PowerBI Developer to support our client, a state transportation agency in Tallahassee, FL, on financial and operational reporting for the Office of the Comptroller. This role will design, build, and maintain PowerBI dashboards, semantic models, and refresh pipelines that surface state accounting and operational data to executives, managers, and program staff.
The developer will work directly with business owners, financial analysts, and IT staff to translate reporting requirements into performant PowerBI solutions. Responsibilities include semantic model design (star schemas, calculated tables), DAX authoring, Power Query transformations from SQL and other source systems, report design and visualization best practices, and PowerBI Service administration (workspaces, dataflows, gateways, row-level security).
Job duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Design, develop, and maintain Microsoft PowerBI reports and dashboards for financial and operational reporting
  • Build performant semantic models using star schemas, calculated tables, and DAX measures
  • Author Power Query (M) transformations to ingest and shape source data from SQL Server, Oracle, or other enterprise sources
  • Manage PowerBI Service artifacts including workspaces, dataflows, datasets, deployment pipelines, and gateways
  • Implement Row-Level Security (RLS) policies for controlled data access
  • Write and optimize T-SQL and views against source databases to support PowerBI data flows
  • Collaborate with business stakeholders to gather reporting requirements and translate them into working dashboards
  • Document data lineage, refresh schedules, semantic model definitions, and end-user guides
  • Provide production support, refresh troubleshooting, and enhancement work on existing dashboards
  • Follow secure coding, data governance, and change management practices in line with state IT policies

Compensation and Term
This opportunity is for a full-time, contract position with possible extensions and pay commensurate with experience up to $80 per hour or $160,000 per year. The initial engagement runs approximately one year with possible renewal, and is 40 hours per week onsite in Tallahassee, FL.
Qualifications you need
A successful candidate has the following experience:
  • Bachelor's degree or technical institute degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Analytics, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience
  • Minimum 5 years of production experience developing enterprise Microsoft PowerBI reports and dashboards
  • Advanced proficiency in DAX for complex measures, time intelligence, and calculated tables
  • Advanced proficiency in Power Query (M) for data ingestion and transformation
  • Strong experience with semantic model design using star schemas and dimensional modeling best practices
  • Strong T-SQL skills, including writing performant queries, views, and stored procedures against SQL Server or Oracle
  • Experience administering PowerBI Service artifacts (workspaces, dataflows, deployment pipelines, gateways, refresh scheduling)
  • Experience implementing Row-Level Security (RLS) in PowerBI
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills for working with business owners, analysts, and IT staff
  • Ability to work 5 days per week onsite in Tallahassee, FL
  • Authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship
  • Ability to pass an FBI Level II background check

Preferred Qualifications
  • Microsoft Certified: Power BI Data Analyst Associate (PL-300) or Microsoft Certified: Data Analyst Associate (DA-100)
  • Microsoft Certified: Azure Data Engineer Associate (DP-203)
  • Experience with PowerBI Premium capacity administration
  • Experience with financial or state government reporting environments
  • Familiarity with FLAIR (Florida Accounting Information Resource), Florida PALM, or comparable state accounting systems
  • Experience with Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse, or comparable modern data pipeline tools
  • Experience with paginated reports (Report Builder) and PowerBI embedded scenarios
