What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a client engineer?

To thrive as a Client Engineer, you need strong programming skills, a solid understanding of client-side architectures, and relevant educational background in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with front-end frameworks (such as React or Angular), version control systems, and debugging tools is typically required. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills help you work effectively with cross-functional teams and address client needs. These skills ensure efficient development of robust client-facing applications and enhanced user experiences.

How does a client engineer typically collaborate with product and design teams during the development process?

Client Engineers work closely with product managers and UX/UI designers to translate user requirements and design prototypes into functional, user-friendly software solutions. Regular collaboration often involves attending sprint planning meetings, providing technical feedback on design feasibility, and iterating on features based on user testing and stakeholder input. Client IT Engineer (Remote)

Treeline

Portland, OR • Remote

$60K - $75K/yr

Full-time

Job description

About Us
A Treeline business unit specializing in managed IT services for nonprofits, schools, and healthcare organizations is looking for its first local Client Engineer in Portland.

The Role
We are looking for a Client Engineer to be the technical partner our Portland clients rely on. This is a field-based, hybrid role. You will manage your own schedule, drive to client sites around the Portland metro, and own client relationships, not just a ticket queue. As an early hire in a growing market, you will help shape how we serve our Portland clients. Mileage is reimbursed.

This is hands-on client IT engineering, not a remote-only help desk.

Candidates must be based in the Portland metro area at the time of hire. Relocation is not supported for this role.

What You Will Do

  • Support clients across Microsoft 365, identity (Entra ID), endpoints, networks, and servers, both onsite and remotely
  • Own client relationships and small projects end to end
  • Troubleshoot at the infrastructure layer: Microsoft 365 tenant configuration, networking, and endpoint management across multiple client environments
  • Explain technical issues clearly to non-technical staff and executives, and document as you go

What We Are Looking For

  • Hands-on experience administering and troubleshooting networks, servers, endpoints, and identity, whether onsite or remote
  • Three or more years in IT support; multi-client or MSP experience strongly preferred
  • Solid Microsoft 365 administration, Entra ID, and networking fundamentals (DNS, DHCP, VPN, firewalls)
  • A strong communicator who builds trust with clients and can adapt to any audience
  • Certifications such as CompTIA Network+, Security+, or Microsoft 365 Administrator (MS-102) preferred
  • Comfortable driving to client sites across the Portland metro

Compensation
$60,000 to $75,000 per year, based on experience.

We are an equal opportunity employer and welcome candidates from all backgrounds.

Note: Background checks will be performed as a condition of employment.
