Job description

Description

The Business Development Associate identifies, researches, and qualifies heavy civil and industrial construction leads and opportunities, and builds early relationships with project owners and engineers that position Morgan Corp. to win the right work. This role feeds the front end of our pursuit and preconstruction process and owns the disciplined entry, tracking, and continual updating of leads and opportunities.
This is a deliberate development pathway for a motivated professional early in their career. You will be coached on heavy civil markets, owners, and the Morgan pursuit process, and given real ownership of the lead pipeline.
Work Environment:
A combination of office, travel, and field environments. Frequent travel to client offices, industry events, and active construction sites; required to follow site safety requirements (PPE) when visiting projects.

Key Responsibilities
Lead & Opportunity Research
  • Proactively research and identify new heavy civil and industrial opportunities across Morgan Corp.’s markets using bid boards, planroom services, public agency capital plans, funding sources, industry media, professional networks, and direct owner/engineer outreach.
  • Track upcoming projects from early planning through procurement monitoring funding status, delivery method, key players, and anticipated bid/RFP timing.
  • Build and maintain target lists of owners, agencies, engineering firms, program managers, and general contractors by market and division geography.

Client & Engineer Engagement
  • Develop and maintain relationships with project owners and design engineers as an early, professional point of contact for Morgan Corp.
  • Communicate clearly and credibly with both owner and engineering audiences, understanding their drivers, project goals, hot buttons, and procurement preferences.
  • Gather and document intelligence (scope, risk, competition, schedule, selection criteria) that strengthens pursuit and capture decisions.

Industry Presence & Events
  • Represent Morgan Corp. at conferences, industry days, association meetings, client meetings, and pre-bid meetings, often as the on-the-ground attendee responsible for capturing and reporting actionable information.
  • Prepare for events with research on attendees, owners, and target opportunities; follow up promptly with contacts and CRM updates.

CRM Ownership & Pipeline Discipline
  • Enter all new leads and opportunities into the company CRM accurately and on a timely basis, and keep records continually updated as pursuits develop, treating the pipeline and capture plan as living documents that reside in CRM and evolve until bid documents are received and estimating begins.
  • Maintain contact records, zipper plans, activities/action items, and key dates so leadership has a reliable, current view of the pipeline.
  • Generate pipeline reports and support go/no-go and bid/no-bid discussions with clean, decision-ready data.
Preconstruction & Pursuit Support
  • Support capture planning and the business-development-to-estimating handoff — contributing project intelligence, key contacts, competitive landscape, and known risks for capture plan review meetings.
  • Assist preconstruction and the estimating team during pursuits by coordinating information, supporting site visits and pre-bid attendance, and helping ensure pursuits are well understood before take-off begins.
  • Support proposal and SOQ efforts with research, content gathering, and client information as requested.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
Required
  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Business, Marketing, Communications, or related field or equivalent relevant experience.
  • 2-5 years of experience; construction/engineering/business development internships or co-ops are a strong plus.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the confidence to engage owners and engineers professionally.
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and self-directed, with the discipline to keep CRM and pipeline data accurate and current.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office; ability to learn and consistently use a CRM platform.
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 75% across the Southeast.
  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
Preferred
  • Familiarity with heavy civil or industrial markets (water resources, power & energy, landfill/environmental, manufacturing, ports & marine).
  • Exposure to public/private procurement, bid boards/planrooms, and the pursuit/capture lifecycle.
  • Experience with CRM platforms and pipeline reporting.

Benefits
Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage
401(k) with company match
PTO, holidays, and a paid winter shutdown
Vehicle allowance and cell phone reimbursement
Professional development & career growth opportunities
Supportive team environment in a respected, growing company
