Your role as a Class Instructor

As an Other Class Instructor with the City of Cortez, you will play a pivotal role in fostering a supportive and engaging learning environment for participants of all levels and abilities, from beginners to advanced. Your responsibilities will include assisting and instructing classes while coordinating with supervisors to create a well-rounded and comprehensive program that meets the community's needs. You will be at the forefront of ensuring safety in the classroom, responding promptly to any incidents that may arise to maintain a secure atmosphere for all participants.

Are you the Class Instructor we're looking for?

To excel as an Other Class Instructor for the City of Cortez, candidates must possess a diverse skill set tailored to various instructional levels. A minimum of 18 years of age is required, along with a current CPR and First Aid Certificate, or the capability to obtain one within six months. Instructors should be physically able to perform duties including program setup and maintenance, as well as lifting at least 50 lbs. Exceptional communication skills, both oral and written, are essential for effective interaction with participants and colleagues.

Successful instructors will work well within a team and foster positive relationships throughout the community. For those applying at higher levels, experience in group-led supervision, independent work capability, and recognized class certifications are crucial. Advanced Instructors should demonstrate versatility by teaching multiple classes and obtaining nationally accredited certifications. This role demands passion, adaptability, and a commitment to promoting a safe and engaging learning environment.

Knowledge and skills required for the position are:
  • Level 1 (minimum required) - Instructor Assistant
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must have CPR and First Aid Certificate or the ability to obtain within six (6) months.
  • Must be able to performs physical duties as required
  • i.e.

  • general class preparation
  • program equipment maintenance
  • and lifting at least 50 lbs.
  • etc.
  • Must have the ability to communicate well orally and in writing.
  • Must be able to work will with other instructors

  • Must have a valid Colorado Driver's License.
  • Level 2 (minimum qualifications plus) - Instructor Apprentice
  • One year group led supervisory experience preferred.
  • Must be able to work independently with little to no supervision.
  • Must have a class certification approved by the Recreation Supervisor/Aquatics.
  • Level 3 (minimum qualifications and second level plus) - Journey-level Instructor
  • Two year group led exercise supervisory experience preferred.
  • Must have multiple class certifications and teach at least three different classes.
  • Level 4 (all previous qualifications
  • plus) - Advanced Instructor
  • Must teach at least 5 different classes.
  • Possession of advanced certification i.e.
  • nationally accredited personal trainer certification
  • is preferred.
