Liberty Mutual is expanding our Environmental Claims team and seeking an experienced Environmental Claims Officer to manage high-exposure environmental, pollution, toxic tort, and mass litigation claims within our Commercial Specialty Lines portfolio!
This is an excellent opportunity for a seasoned claims professional who thrives in complex coverage and liability analysis, enjoys collaborating with legal and industry experts, and is looking to make a meaningful impact at a Fortune 100 carrier known for its financial strength, innovation, and commitment to customer advocacy. In this highly visible role, you'll exercise significant judgment and ownership throughout the entire claim lifecycle, from coverage analysis and investigation through litigation management, negotiation, and resolution. You'll partner closely with policyholders, brokers, reinsurers, underwriting, and defense counsel while helping shape outcomes on some of our most challenging and technically sophisticated claims.

Work Arrangement
We strongly prefer candidates located within 50 miles of one of our hub offices in (Westborough, MA, Boston, MA, Weatogue, CT, Suwanee, GA, , Plano, TX, Hoffman Estates, IL, Indianapolis, IN, Lake Oswego, OR, Las Vegas, NV, Chandler, AZ). Team members within commuting distance are expected to work from the office approximately two times per month. We will also consider highly qualified remote candidates who do not reside near a hub location.
What You'll Do
As an Environmental Claims Officer, you will independently manage a portfolio of complex environmental and pollution claims while delivering exceptional claim outcomes through thoughtful investigation, strategic litigation management, and proactive resolution efforts.
Key responsibilities include:
  • Analyze, investigate, and evaluate complex environmental, pollution, toxic tort, and related specialty claims to determine coverage, liability, and claim disposition.
  • Own claim strategy from initial notice through final resolution, ensuring timely, fair, and cost-effective outcomes.
  • Establish and manage indemnity and expense reserves, ensuring reserve adequacy throughout the life of the claim.
  • Recommend reserve adjustments and strategic actions on matters that exceed settlement authority.
  • Prepare comprehensive claim analyses and reports for management and business partners.
  • Identify emerging claim trends, coverage issues, and portfolio insights, communicating findings to leadership and underwriting teams.
  • Direct and oversee litigation strategy through the selection and management of defense counsel and other experts.
  • Manage legal budgets, invoice review, and adherence to litigation management guidelines.
  • Lead negotiations and actively participate in mediations, arbitrations, and settlement discussions.
  • Partner with brokers, risk managers, reinsurers, and insureds to strengthen relationships and deliver exceptional service.
  • Support audit and compliance processes while maintaining required adjuster licenses and professional credentials.
We are open to fill this position at a level commensurate to experience as an Environmental Claims Officer or Complex Environmental Claims Specialist.
Qualifications
What Makes You Successful
You bring strong technical expertise, sound judgment, and the ability to navigate highly complex claims involving multiple stakeholders and evolving legal and regulatory considerations. You're comfortable making independent decisions, influencing outcomes, and balancing customer service with strong business acumen Bachelors'
Preferred experience:
  • Bachelor's Degree and/or advanced degree. J.D. preferred.
  • 7 + years claims/legal experience, with at least 2 years within a technical specialty preferred
  • Advanced knowledge of claims handling concepts, practices and techniques, to include but not limited to coverage issues, and product line knowledge
  • Functional knowledge of law and insurance regulations in various jurisdictions
  • Demonstrated advanced verbal and written communications skills
  • Demonstrated advanced analytical, decision making and negotiation skills
  • Advanced Environmental Claims and/or Pollution Claims experience preferred
  • Experience with mass litigation and/or toxic tort required
