How much do civil structural design engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 17, 2026, the average yearly pay for civil structural design engineer in the United States is $102,774.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $74,000.00 and $132,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

How does a Civil Structural Design Engineer typically collaborate with architects and other engineering disciplines during a project?

Civil Structural Design Engineers work closely with architects and professionals from other engineering fields—such as mechanical, electrical, and geotechnical engineers—throughout the design and construction phases. They participate in regular coordination meetings to integrate structural solutions with architectural vision and ensure compliance with safety codes and project requirements. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as structural engineers must often adapt their designs based on feedback and changes made by other disciplines. This collaborative environment fosters a dynamic workflow and offers opportunities to learn from a diverse team of experts.

What is the difference between Civil Structural Design Engineer vs Civil Structural Engineer?

AspectCivil Structural Design EngineerCivil Structural Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Civil Engineering, PE license often preferredBachelor's or Master's in Civil Engineering, PE license often required
Work EnvironmentDesign offices, project sites, consulting firmsDesign offices, project sites, construction firms
Primary FocusCreating detailed structural designs and plansAssessing, analyzing, and overseeing structural integrity
Industry UsageDesign and consulting firms, construction companiesConstruction, consulting, government agencies

The Civil Structural Design Engineer primarily focuses on creating detailed structural designs and plans, while the Civil Structural Engineer often oversees the assessment and analysis of structures during construction and maintenance. Both roles require similar credentials and work environments, but their core responsibilities differ slightly, with the design engineer emphasizing planning and the structural engineer emphasizing evaluation and oversight.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Civil Structural Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Civil Structural Design Engineer, you need a strong background in civil engineering principles, structural analysis, and design, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering and, often, a Professional Engineer (PE) license. Proficiency in design software such as AutoCAD, SAP2000, ETABS, and familiarity with relevant building codes and standards are essential. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for successful project delivery and stakeholder collaboration. These competencies ensure safe, efficient, and compliant structural designs that meet client and regulatory requirements.

What are Civil Structural Design Engineers?

Civil Structural Design Engineers are professionals who specialize in designing the framework and structural components of buildings, bridges, and other infrastructure projects. They ensure that structures are safe, stable, and capable of withstanding environmental stresses such as wind, earthquakes, and heavy loads. Their work involves analyzing project requirements, creating design blueprints, selecting appropriate materials, and working closely with architects and construction teams to bring projects to life. Additionally, they must adhere to local building codes and regulations to ensure public safety. This role requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and proficiency in design software.

Job Description
Position Summary
Shape the future of energy infrastructure at the American Centrifuge Plant (ACP) in Piketon, Ohio. Centrus Energy is seeking an experienced, proactive Civil/Structural Design Engineer to lead the engineering development, analysis, and execution of facility modifications within a high-stakes, safety-critical environment. In this role, you will bridge the gap between design concepts and field execution, ensuring all structural steel, concrete systems, foundations, and equipment supports meet the highest standards of quality, safety, and regulatory compliance from design to turnover.
The Impact You will have:
  • Lead Structural Design & Analysis: Drive civil/structural engineering for site modifications, performing complex analyses for static and dynamic loads, including wind, seismic, vibration, and thermal effects-to verify structural capacity for new and existing systems.
  • Engineering Deliverables: Develop, review, and redline comprehensive design packages (drawings, specifications, calculations) for foundations, structural steel, and equipment anchorage, focusing on buildability and reducing field rework risk.
  • Interdisciplinary Coordination: Collaborate closely with mechanical, electrical, and I&C teams to ensure seamless integration of equipment loads, penetrations, and layout constraints.
  • Field Engineering & Compliance: Support construction through field walkdowns, RFI/RFC resolution, and as-built updates, ensuring all work adheres to stringent configuration control and safety regulations.
  • Procurement & Project Support: Develop detailed, code-compliant procurement packages (ROMs, SOWs) for subcontracted fabrication and installation, supporting technical bid evaluations.
We'd Love to Hear from Candidates with:
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (or equivalent) from an ABET-accredited institution.
  • Experienced professional (5+ yrs) with a strong background in structural design, analysis, and field support, preferably within a regulated, industrial, or nuclear environment.
  • Strong working knowledge of AISC, ACI, and applicable seismic/building codes.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Q level security clearance.
In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon hire.
This position will require a pre--employment background check and a pre-employment drug test.
