Both roles require a civil engineering degree, but the Civil Manager emphasizes leadership and project management skills.

How does a civil manager typically coordinate with other departments on large-scale construction projects?

A Civil Manager plays a central role in ensuring smooth collaboration between engineering, procurement, and construction teams on major projects. They regularly attend interdisciplinary meetings to align project timelines, share updates, and address potential conflicts early. Effective communication and documentation are crucial, as the Civil Manager must translate civil engineering requirements into actionable tasks for different teams. This collaborative approach helps minimize delays and ensures that all departments are working toward shared project goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a civil manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Civil Manager, you need a solid background in civil engineering, strong project management skills, and a relevant degree or professional certification such as PMP or PE. Familiarity with industry-standard software like AutoCAD, MS Project, and construction management systems is typically required. Exceptional leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills help coordinate teams and engage stakeholders effectively. These skills ensure the successful delivery of projects on time, within budget, and in compliance with safety and quality standards.

What is a civil manager?

Civil Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing and coordinating civil engineering projects, which may include infrastructure development, construction, and maintenance of public works such as roads, bridges, and buildings. They manage teams of engineers, contractors, and other staff to ensure projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards. Civil Managers also handle project planning, resource allocation, regulatory compliance, and communication with stakeholders. Their role is crucial in ensuring that civil engineering projects run smoothly and meet all safety and legal requirements.

Job description

Company Description
Vrana Civil is one of the Midwest's leading general construction firms, built on over a century of family-driven values and quality craftsmanship. Known for fostering a close-knit culture, the company invests in training and innovation to remain at the forefront of the construction industry. With a commitment to balancing tradition and progress, Vrana Civil continues to expand its capabilities, attracting skilled professionals and consistently delivering exceptional results to clients.
Senior Project Manager - Heavy Civil Concrete Paving + Structures
Vrana Civil is looking for a proven builder and leader to step into one of the most important roles in our company.
This is not a middle-management PM position. This role reports directly to the President and is built for someone who wants to do more than manage projects. The right person will lead major work today while also helping shape the future of the company for years to come.
If you've built complex concrete paving and structural work, know how to lead strong field and office teams, and want a bigger seat at the table, this is that opportunity.
What makes this role different
  • Most senior PM jobs talk about leadership. This one actually gives it to you.
  • You'll work directly with the President, help drive major project decisions, influence operations, mentor the next generation, and play a real role in the long-term growth of the company.
  • No layers. No silos. No waiting on decisions.
  • This is a role for someone who wants to help build something that lasts.

Our mindset
  • We believe in a hire and retire mentality.
  • We are not looking for someone chasing the next title every couple of years. We want someone who is looking for the right place to invest long-term, grow with the business, and help lead where the company goes next.

What you'll do
  • Lead major heavy civil projects from preconstruction through closeout
  • Take full ownership of concrete paving and structural scopes
  • Drive estimating, budgeting, forecasting, scheduling, staffing, and execution
  • Partner closely with superintendents and field leadership to maximize production
  • Solve problems quickly and keep projects moving
  • Build strong relationships with owners, engineers, subcontractors, and key partners
  • Mentor project engineers, assistant PMs, and emerging leaders
  • Help improve how the company operates, plans, and grows
  • Serve as a key leader in shaping the future direction of Vrana Civil

What we're looking for
  • At least 8+ years of experience in concrete paving and/or structural work
  • Degree in Civil Engineering or Construction Management
  • Strong heavy civil construction background
  • Experience managing structures such as bridges, box culverts, retaining walls, cast-in-place structures, or utility structures
  • Ability to lead large, complex projects with confidence and accountability
  • Strong grasp of cost control, production, scheduling, sequencing, and risk management
  • A leader who can earn trust in the field, communicate clearly, and make things happen
  • Someone looking for a long-term opportunity, not a short stop

Location
  • Based in Omaha, Nebraska
  • Local work only - no travel required
  • Strong preference for candidates with ties to the Omaha market

Why this is a big opportunity
  • You'll report directly to the President.
  • You'll lead critical work.
  • You'll have the ability to impact operations, people, growth, and the future of the business.
  • If you want a bigger seat at the table and the chance to help shape what a company becomes over the next several years, we want to talk.
  • Competitive Compensation + Benefit Packages

Recruiting Note
Vrana Civil is handling this search directly. We are not partnering with third-party recruiters on this position.
