Civil Engineer Structural Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Civil/Structural Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Civil/Structural Engineer, you need a solid background in structural analysis, design principles, mathematics, and a relevant engineering degree, often supported by licensure such as a PE (Professional Engineer) certification. Proficiency with CAD software, structural analysis tools (like SAP2000 or ETABS), and familiarity with building codes and standards is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with clients, architects, and construction teams. These competencies are crucial to ensure safe, efficient, and compliant infrastructure projects from concept to completion.

What are some common challenges faced by structural engineers on multidisciplinary project teams?

Structural engineers often work closely with architects, mechanical engineers, and contractors, which can lead to challenges in coordinating design intentions, timelines, and technical requirements. Ensuring that the structural design integrates seamlessly with architectural aesthetics and MEP (mechanical, electrical, plumbing) systems is crucial, and may require frequent communication and compromise. Managing changes in project scope or addressing unforeseen site conditions can also add complexity, making adaptability and strong collaboration skills essential for success.

What does a Civil Engineer Structural Engineer do?

A Civil Engineer Structural Engineer is responsible for designing, analyzing, and overseeing the construction of structures such as buildings, bridges, and tunnels to ensure they are strong, stable, and safe. They use principles of physics and mathematics to evaluate how structures will withstand forces like gravity, wind, and earthquakes. Structural engineers often collaborate with architects and construction teams, select appropriate building materials, and ensure projects comply with safety codes and regulations.

Design Engineer - Structural

Quanta Infrastructure Solutions Group (QISG) is a rapidly growing interdisciplinary engineering company within the Quanta Services (Quanta) family of companies. Quanta Services ranks #1 on the ENR 2024 Top 600 Specialty Contractors list, designing and building some of the largest infrastructure projects in North America. QISG is seeking project level structural engineering professionals interested in working to support large-scale engineering and construction projects throughout North America by providing structural design solutions to our construction partners and clients.

A Design Engineer (Structural) within QISG is involved in a variety of engineering projects with a focus on structural aspects of energy related infrastructure and design-build delivery methods for large-scale energy generation, transmission, and substation-related projects. Collaborating with an in-house, multi-disciplinary engineering and construction team — including civil, structural, geotechnical, construction management, and construction experts — the Design Engineer within QISG plays a crucial role in providing structural design solutions; responsibilities include supporting design production, contributing to the development of construction drawings and specifications, and engineering support during construction. This role is an office-based position with a primary focus on executing pre-construction design, development of construction plans, and construction support services during construction and erection. The Design Engineer will be expected to apply standard and advanced engineering principles, under the direct oversight of a Professional Engineer, to solve complex problems. A successful candidate is able to utilize sound engineering judgement, field data collected by themselves or others, and digital technologies to develop economical solutions to support civil/structural construction and communicate effectively with project management, technical, and construction personnel.

Responsibilities

  • Execute assignments requiring application of standard and advanced engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria to carry out structural related engineering tasks.
  • Perform structural engineering analyses for design of energy infrastructure buildings & building components, substation auxiliary support structures, deep foundations, retaining structures, protective blast walls, and other heavy civil and energy related structural systems.
  • Perform finite element modeling for various concrete or steel structures and develop associated reports for client and permit review.
  • Interface closely with other staff, project, and senior leadership personnel within the company, including geotechnical, geological, structural, transmission line, and civil engineering, GIS, and construction management team members.
  • Develop written reports and/or provide verbal communication of information in a professional and appropriate manner.
  • Perform occasional site visits to project sites located throughout North America.
  • Participation in sector focused professional organizations, and attendance and presentations at industry events.
  • Work under supervision of Project Engineer, Senior Engineer, or Engineering Manager in a professional office setting.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related field
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Fundamentals in Engineering (FE) certification with an interest in obtaining Professional Engineer licensure in one or multiple states
  • 0 to 3 years design experience in the structural engineering field working with concrete and steel materials
  • Familiarity with the use of the following computer software: RISA, SPColumn, and AutoDesk INVENTOR
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams
  • Ability to work with moderate supervision and maximum efficiency in a small or medium-sized office setting
  • Substation and/or transmission structure design experience
  • Familiarity with the use of the following computer software: AutoCAD (with or without the Advanced Steel Extension), Revit, LPILE, GROUP, FAD, SHAFT, APILE

Benefits

  • Competitive Compensation
  • 401(k) Retirement Plan
  • Holiday Pay
  • Paid Time Off (PTO)
  • Comprehensive Health Coverage
  • Pet Insurance
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
