Civil Engineer Relocation Intern information

What does a Civil Engineer Relocation Intern do?

A Civil Engineer Relocation Intern assists with projects that involve moving or relocating infrastructure, utilities, or buildings to accommodate new construction or public works. Their responsibilities often include supporting the design and planning process, preparing technical documents, conducting site visits, and collaborating with senior engineers. The internship provides hands-on experience in relocation logistics, project management, and civil engineering principles, making it a valuable opportunity for students or recent graduates interested in the field.

What types of projects and responsibilities can a Civil Engineer Relocation Intern expect to be involved with during their internship?

As a Civil Engineer Relocation Intern, you'll typically assist with tasks related to infrastructure relocation, such as supporting the planning and coordination of moving utilities or roadways to accommodate construction projects. You may work alongside experienced engineers to conduct site assessments, draft plans, and ensure compliance with regulatory standards. Interns often collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including surveyors, project managers, and contractors, gaining hands-on exposure to project documentation, field visits, and client meetings. This role offers a valuable opportunity to understand the complexities of relocation projects and develop practical engineering skills in a real-world environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Civil Engineer Relocation Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Civil Engineer Relocation Intern, you need a foundational understanding of civil engineering principles, coursework toward a relevant degree, and strong analytical skills. Familiarity with design software such as AutoCAD, GIS systems, and Microsoft Office, along with any internship-specific safety certifications, is often expected. Strong communication, teamwork, and adaptability help interns collaborate effectively with diverse teams and manage changing project requirements. These skills and qualities are crucial for supporting complex relocation projects, ensuring technical accuracy, and integrating smoothly into professional engineering environments.

Are you a Civil Engineering student ready to move beyond the textbook? Join Thompson & Litton in our Radford office for a hands-on internship that puts you at the center of land development and infrastructure design. This isn't just a role for 'assisting'-it's an opportunity to learn the intricacies of site development, stormwater management, and utility design while working directly alongside licensed Professional Engineers (PEs).
The Role: What You'll Do
As a Civil Engineer Intern, you will be an integral part of our design team, supporting both public and private sector projects that shape the Southwest Virginia landscape. You will:
  • Design & Draft: Support the development of conceptual site layouts and construction drawings using AutoCAD Civil 3D.
  • Solve Problems: Assist with grading design, earthwork analyses, and complex stormwater management systems.
  • Navigate Regulations: Research municipal zoning and development ordinances to ensure project compliance.
  • Get in the Field: Participate in site visits and field investigations to see how plans translate to reality.
  • Build the Foundation: Help prepare engineering reports, technical specifications, and project proposals.
What You'll Bring
  • Current Pursuit: You are currently enrolled in a Bachelor of Science program for Civil Engineering.
  • Communication: Strong written and verbal skills to help translate technical data into clear reports.
  • Tech Savvy: Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word and Excel).
Preferred Skills (The 'Nice-to-Haves')
  • Experience or interest in AutoCAD or Civil 3D.
  • Coursework emphasis in land development, water resources, or transportation.
  • A detail-oriented mindset and a desire to work in a collaborative, team-centric environment.
Why Thompson & Litton?
