Job Title: Civil Engineer

Job Description

The Civil Engineer will lead and support civil/site design projects from concept through construction, with a strong focus on site layout, grading, drainage, and utility design using AutoCAD Civil 3D. This role combines hands-on technical design, project coordination, and mentorship responsibilities within a small, fast-paced office that offers exposure to a wide variety of private development, municipal, and some federal projects. The position is ideal for a driven engineer who wants to grow into greater responsibility and potential ownership within the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive site layout, grading, drainage, and utility design using AutoCAD Civil 3D for a variety of civil/site development projects.
  • Create detailed site plans and construction drawings that meet project objectives, client expectations, and regulatory requirements.
  • Prepare complete construction plan sets and technical reports, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and compliance with applicable standards.
  • Research, interpret, and apply federal, state, and local codes, ordinances, and regulations to all design work.
  • Coordinate closely with clients, architects, contractors, and jurisdictional authorities to advance projects through design, permitting, and construction phases.
  • Support the Project Manager with design decisions, cost considerations, scheduling, and client communication to keep projects on track.
  • Mentor junior engineers by providing technical guidance, reviewing their work, and serving as a subject matter resource on assigned projects.
  • Independently manage small-scale projects with oversight from senior leadership, including planning, design, coordination, and documentation.
  • Assist with permit and plan submittals, respond to review comments, and support the approval process with regulatory agencies.
  • Provide construction-phase services, which may include responding to RFIs, reviewing shop drawings, and performing site observations as needed.
  • Collaborate effectively with colleagues across disciplines and departments to meet project milestones and company objectives.
  • Manage time, tasks, and priorities across multiple concurrent projects while maintaining high-quality deliverables.
  • Occasionally travel for site visits or out-of-town assignments in support of project needs.

Essential Skills

  • 3–8 years of experience in civil/site engineering.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in civil engineering or a closely related field.
  • EIT certification required.
  • PE license preferred or actively in progress.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D for civil/site design, including roadways, grading, drainage, and utilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to create site plans in Civil 3D from concept through detailed design.
  • Strong knowledge of grading and drainage principles in site development.
  • Understanding of permitting processes and regulatory compliance for civil/site projects.
  • Experience working within the private sector on development projects.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, for effective interaction with clients, team members, and regulatory agencies.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and sound engineering judgment.
  • Proactive mindset with a focus on delivering high-quality, accurate work.
  • Ability to work independently and take ownership of assigned tasks and projects.
  • Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel for site visits and project needs.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with site development projects for private clients, municipalities, and some federal work.
  • Familiarity with drainage design, utility design, and overall site development best practices.
  • Ability to mentor junior engineers and contribute to a collaborative learning environment.
  • Comfort working in a small, fast-paced office where responsibilities are broad and varied.
