POSITON SUMMARY:

The Civil Engineer will support in-house and capital-funded projects by conducting condition surveys, prioritizing repairs, reviewing design packages, and performing construction inspections. The role also includes responding to RFIs and submittals to ensure compliance with NYCT standards.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The incumbent will be responsible for, as part of the Civil-Structural (C/S) group, providing engineering and design needs of facilities and structures within New York City Transit. Duties will include: comprehensive, up-close inspection of various NYCT Structure Types including Viaducts, Elevated Track, Subway Tunnels, Under river Tubes, retaining walls, stations, manholes, facilities, yards and emergency exits to provide technical guidance in repairing, maintaining or building civil-structural works with Infrastructure In-house forces, the Division of stations, and other divisions of MOW such as Track, Hydraulics, Heating and Ventilation, and outside contractors.; performing cost estimates, preparing scopes of work and project profiles for inclusion in repair work with in-house forces, vendor contracts and/ or capital programs in the Infrastructure Engineering subdivision.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Assistant Civil Engineer:

  1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college in civil engineering and one year of full-time satisfactory experience in civil engineering work; or
  2. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college in civil engineering technology and three years of full-time satisfactory experience in civil engineering work; or
  3. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and a master's degree from an accredited college in civil engineering.

Civil Engineer I, II, and III:

  1. A valid New York State Professional Engineer's License
  2. Four years of full-time experience in civil engineering.
  3. A master's degree in civil engineering from an accredited college will be accepted as equivalent to one year of full-time experience in civil engineering.

Special Note:

In addition to above qualification requirements, to be eligible for placement in Assignment Levels II and III, individuals must have at least one year within the last three years of experience as a major contributor or a project leader on a complex project requiring additional and specific expertise in the disciplines needed to design or construct the project.

LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: A Motor Vehicle Driver’s License valid in the State of New York may be required for certain assignments. If required, this license must be maintained for duration of appointment.

DESIRED SKILLS:

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively within a team.
  • Proficiency in MS Office, internet and mobile applications, MicroStation, and nonconformity‑tracking databases.
  • Knowledge of structural inspection practices for concrete and steel.
  • Ability to read and produce technical drawings, reports, and engineering correspondence.
  • Thorough understanding of construction design requirements and applicable codes across multiple city agencies.

Final salary is determined experience, skillset, and alignment with compensation practices. The posted range reflects expected compensation and may be updated as market or business needs evolve.
