Job description

Position Purpose/Summary This is a specialized, part-time recreation work in conducting a variety of programming opportunities including: staffing a community center, the open-gym program, evening recreation program, and the summer enrichment program. Work involves responsibility for exercising leadership in the Park Department's recreational programs as well as in other seasonal special events. Work is performed in the area of specialization, under supervision, in accordance with standard recreational practices and procedures.

Supervision is exercised over other seasonal recreational personnel. Essential Functions Plans and develops city-wide recreational programs in the observance of special events including operating a community center and summer, open gym, and evening recreation programs Organizes and coordinates special recreational events including summer and evening gym programs on a city-wide basis Organizes and instructs volunteer and neighborhood groups and individuals assisting in these programs Evaluates programs, makes recommendations, requisitions necessary equipment and supplies, schedules use of the community center, and makes periodic activity reports Provides direct supervision of Head Recreation Leaders in the summer, open gym, and evening recreation programs Works in collaboration with school department employees including but not limited to school day administrators, staff, and custodians Responsible for the collection of all pertinent program data including registration forms, sign-in sheets, maintenance forms, and employee and non-employee injury forms Responsible for maintaining a safe environment for both participants and staff Performs related work as required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Considerable knowledge of the techniques, methods, materials, and equipment involved in conducting city-wide recreation programs and special events of all types; scheduling of use of a community center and maintaining open space Considerable knowledge of rules and regulations governing conduct of park facility and equipment Some knowledge of first aid Ability to plan, develop, and coordinate a varied program of special events and seasonal programming Ability to enforce facility rules and regulations firmly, tactfully, and impartially Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with recreational personnel and facility users Excellent communication and inter-personal skills which are required to work with a variety of staff including students, professionals, school administrators, and community based organizations Skill in performing and teaching recreational activities Education and Experience Minimum of one year experience in planning, organizing, and evaluating special events and seasonal programs Minimum of one year supervisory experience Work experience in recreation or related field
