Under general supervision, the Streets Maintenance Supervisor directs and coordinates the work of field service crews engaged in the maintenance and repair of City-owned streets, buildings, and related facilities and systems. Work is performed in a standard office environment and within public rights of way. Experienced - Demonstrates strong knowledge of street maintenance, asphalt and concrete repairs, sidewalks, drainage, traffic control, right-of-way operations, and public works construction practices. Team Player - Works effectively with employees, departments, and outside agencies. Organized - Plans and prioritizes daily and long-range work; manages schedules, service requests, permits, materials, equipment, records, budgets, and project documentation. Accountable-Sets clear expectations, follows up on assignments, documents work, and holds employees and contractors responsible for results. Forward-Thinking-Anticipates maintenance needs, identifies future CIP and budget priorities, and prepares the Division for upcoming projects and regulatory requirements. Adaptable - Remains calm and effective during emergencies, storm events, after-hour response, special events, and changing City priorities.

Examples of Duties Depending upon assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: Layout, assign, supervise and participate in the work of skilled and semi-skilled field services crews engaged in repair and operations activities and/or the repair and maintenance of street and drainage facilities including such things as repairing and patching sidewalks, curb and gutter removal and replacement, storm drain maintenance and the layout and maintenance of traffic control devices. Maintain time, material and equipment use records. Estimate quantities and order materials and equipment.

Investigate complaints and recommend corrective actions as necessary to resolve complaints. Check streets, side walks, curbs gutters and drainage facilities for needed maintenance and repairs. Inspect the work of crews while in progress.

Provide advice and assistance to provide the most efficient and effective work methods and assure the utilization of safe work practices. Explain the effect of work projects to adjacent property owners and assist in resolving complaints. Assist in preparing cost estimates for system maintenance and repair activities, Assist in coordinating system maintenance activities with other city departments, divisions and sections as well as with outside agencies.

Respond to emergency situations, supervise, train and evaluate subordinates. Perform related duties as assigned. Typical Qualifications Knowledge of: Principles, practices, methods, materials and equipment used in public works and/or parks system maintenance and repair activities.

Types and level of maintenance and repair activities generally performed in a street maintenance and/or parks maintenance program. Occupational hazards and standard safety precautions necessary in the work. Legends, markings, sizes and location of traffic control devices as required by local, state and federal regulations.

Geography of the city, including the location of major utility systems, streets and drainage facilities. Basic elements of civil engineering as they relate to street maintenance and repair; or methods and practices in the installation and maintenance of irrigation systems. Principles and practices of personnel management.

Principles of supervision and contract administration. Record keeping and reporting procedures. Hazards and accepted safety precautions of the work.

Ability to: Effectively supervise, participate, assign schedule, coordinate and direct work performed in the repair and maintenance of street systems and related facilities and/or grounds maintenance, repair and construction. Prepare and maintain a variety of records and reports. Communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.

Read and interpret plans, blueprints, construction drawings and specifications. Estimate time, materials and equipment needed to perform maintenance and repair work. Supervise, train and evaluate subordinates.

Provide cost and materials estimates for work performed. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, contractors, and the general public. Work in emergency situations and effectively make decisions in difficult situations.

Experience and Education Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: Experience: Five(5) years of increasingly responsible experience in street maintenance, including some lead supervisory experience. Education: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented with specialized courses in supervision and construction related subjects.

License: Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate valid California driver's license. PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES/REQUIREMENTS: Physical activities may include, but are not limited to, the following: See well enough to read blueprints and standard text; Hear and speak well enough to converse in person, over the radio, and on the telephone and be understood. Stoop, bend, and reach to pick up material, crawl in confined spaces, traverse rough terrain, climb into and out of trenches and climb ladders up to 15 feet high to inspect work.

Use of hands and fingers to write, draw diagrams, use hand tools; strength to lift and carry up to 100 pounds; stamina to work a regular work schedule and beyond in the event of emergencies.
