Description
The IT & Automation Systems Specialist is responsible for overseeing automation, controls, and industrial IT systems across pack lines and facility operations. This role combines hands-on automation expertise with system ownership, ensuring reliable performance of pack line equipment, industrial networks, and production data systems. This position also provides mid-level IT support for plant and operational systems, ensuring timely resolution of technical issues and maintaining system reliability across both automation and business-critical applications. This position serves as the bridge between Operations, and IT driving uptime, data visibility, and continuous improvement across a vertically integrated citrus operation.
Essential Functions:
• Own PLC, HMI, and control system performance across pack lines (sizers, optical sorters, baggers, palletizers)
• Lead troubleshooting of complex automation issues and recurring downtime events
• Standardize control systems, programming structures, and documentation
• Oversee automation upgrades and capital improvement projects
• Partner with Operations to optimize throughput and production visibility
• Improve equipment synchronization and reduce manual touchpoints
• Own pack line network maintenance (switches, VLANs, device connectivity)
• Ensure reliable communication between PLCs, HMIs, vision systems, and servers
• Partner with IT on backups, and system architecture
• Lead integration between automation systems and ERP
• Provide Tier 2 support for plant and office systems, escalating complex issues when necessary
• Troubleshoot hardware and software issues (PCs, printers, scanners, label systems)
• Support user access, permissions, and system functionality across operational software
• Assist with troubleshooting ERP-related issues impacting operations
• Coordinate with IT team on ticket prioritization and resolution timelines
• Help improve visibility and tracking of IT tickets related to operations
• Support traceability systems tied to lot/plot codes
• Ensure data accuracy and system reliability
• Help prioritize and coordinate IT and automation support work
• Support and mentor maintenance and junior technicians
Requirements
• 3+ years in industrial automation or controls
• PLC experience
• Experience with industrial networking and system integration
• Experience providing mid-level IT support in an operational environment
• Ability to troubleshoot across electrical, controls, and IT systems
• Vaid CA DL/Clean drivers record may be required.
Preferred:
• Citrus or fresh produce packhouse experience
• Experience with high-speed packing systems
• Exposure to ERP/data integration
