Position Summary:

The Library Assistant Specialist provides excellent service to people of all ages. This position directly performs library service tasks including: circulation of materials, answering reference and reader's advisory questions, providing technology assistance, and assisting guests at the service desk.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrates welcoming behaviors and internal service standards to encourage approachability and effective interactions with vendors, guests, and staff at all levels of the organization.
  • Interprets library policies and procedures in a guest-responsive manner and reports any unresolved problems to the Branch Manager or Person-in-Charge.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of the library materials, services, and programs and promotes to people of all ages.
  • Answers library guest reference questions, in person and on the telephone, using materials in a variety of formats (i.e., books, audio/visual materials, databases, periodicals, etc.), including the online catalog and the internet.
  • Provides reader's advisory services and bibliographic instruction for library guests of all ages.
  • Reserves library materials and facilitates interlibrary loan requests for library guests, using a computerized holds management system.
  • Participates in marketing the collection and library services (passive programs, displays, etc.). Promotes library programs and services.
  • Conducts training for the public in the use of computers and other electronic resources, and assists guests in using the online catalog, computers, internet, printer, self-check-out stations, and copiers.
  • Uses library circulation system to assist library guests at the desk, including checking materials in and out, processing holds, registering borrowers, explaining overdue policies and procedures, and collecting fines and fees accurately.
  • Assists in opening and closing duties by counting money, using the financial functions to print and balance the cash sheet, emptying material drops, preparing materials for the shuttle, and ensuring the proper appearance of the branch.
  • Maintains knowledge of the Dewey Decimal Classification system in order to sort and shelve materials on a daily basis. Assists in the maintenance of the collections including the processing of donations as assigned.
  • Performs general clerical duties as assigned, such as maintaining branch files, recording monthly engagement statistics, processing vendor reports, and ordering office and hygiene supplies within the assigned budget.
  • Monitors branch safety and facility conditions, notifies manager or administration as issues occur, and completes facility reports.
  • Participates in professional development activities including conferences, workshops, seminars, and webinars.
  • Regular and predictable physical attendance.

Additional Examples of Work Performed:

  • Assists with system-wide decision making by serving on committees, including performance troupes. Assists in setting branch short range goals, objectives, and priorities.
  • Assists with the training of new staff members in library policies and procedures. May serve as a mentor for new staff.
  • Assists with supervision of volunteer and other community service workers activities.

Qualifications and Required Abilities:

  • High school diploma required; two years of related experience preferred.
  • Strong customer service, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office, computers, and basic technology troubleshooting.
  • Familiarity with library resources, reference services, and office equipment preferred.
  • Organized, detail-oriented, and able to multitask and work independently.
  • Professional, dependable, and able to maintain confidentiality.
  • Available to work evenings, weekends, and at multiple branch locations as needed.
  • Able to lift up to 50 pounds, move loaded book carts, and perform shelving and other physical library duties.
  • Reliable transportation required.
