Circ information

What is a circ?

Circ jobs typically refer to positions within a library’s circulation department. These roles often involve checking materials in and out, managing library accounts, shelving books, and assisting patrons with basic inquiries. Circulation staff play a key role in ensuring the smooth operation of the library and providing customer service to visitors. They may also handle overdue fines and maintain the organization of library materials. Some positions may require knowledge of library software and strong communication skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a circulation manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Circulation Manager, you need organizational skills, data analysis abilities, and experience in distribution logistics, typically supported by a degree in business, communications, or a related field. Familiarity with circulation management software, database systems, and reporting tools is essential. Strong interpersonal skills, problem-solving, and customer service orientation help you excel in coordinating teams and responding to subscriber needs. These skills ensure efficient distribution, subscriber satisfaction, and the smooth operation of print or digital publication circulation.

How does a circulation assistant typically interact with library patrons and staff during a regular shift?

A Circ. (Circulation Assistant) acts as a primary point of contact for library patrons, assisting them with checking materials in and out, answering account questions, and helping locate resources. They work closely with other library staff to coordinate holds, manage overdue items, and ensure the smooth operation of circulation desks. Circ. staff often handle a variety of inquiries, so strong customer service and communication skills are essential. Team collaboration is common, especially when resolving patron issues or managing busy periods.
