Job description

Job Title: Engineering Project Manager – Geotechnical Practice

Job Description

This Engineering Project Manager role supports the continued growth of a Georgia-based geotechnical practice by leading complex geotechnical engineering projects from proposal through completion. You will serve as a technical project leader who manages schedules and budgets, oversees field and laboratory programs, mentors project engineers and EITs, and maintains strong client relationships across transportation, water/wastewater, municipal, and design-build infrastructure projects. The position offers a hybrid, office-first environment with a culture of mentorship, direct access to leadership, and significant opportunities to influence the future direction of the geotechnical practice.

Responsibilities

  • Manage geotechnical engineering projects from initial proposal through successful completion, ensuring scope, schedule, and budget are met.
  • Lead client communications, including technical discussions, progress updates, and expectation management throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Develop and manage project schedules and budgets, including budget tracking, utilization reviews, revenue forecasting, WIP management, and labor tracking.
  • Coordinate drilling programs, subsurface investigations, soil borings, field activities, and laboratory testing to support geotechnical evaluations.
  • Review boring logs, engineering calculations, geotechnical analyses, and technical reports to ensure accuracy, quality, and compliance with project requirements.
  • Prepare and review geotechnical reports, foundation recommendations, and engineering analyses for transportation, water/wastewater, municipal, and design-build infrastructure projects.
  • Independently identify project risks, evaluate alternatives, and develop practical solutions that align with client objectives and project constraints.
  • Lead and mentor project engineers and EITs by delegating engineering tasks, reviewing work products, providing coaching, and managing project teams.
  • Support and manage multiple simultaneous projects, balancing technical leadership, project management, and client-facing responsibilities.
  • Conduct resource planning and project forecasting using Deltek Vantagepoint or similar project management tools.
  • Present findings and recommendations to clients, contractors, and stakeholders in a clear, professional manner.
  • Contribute to business development activities by nurturing client relationships and supporting pursuit of new transportation and infrastructure projects.
  • Support the growth and future direction of the Georgia geotechnical practice through leadership, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Maintain a strong client-facing presence with ownership of project budgets and financial performance.
  • Collaborate closely with internal teams to ensure project deliverables meet technical standards and align with the organization’s culture of mentorship and development.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or Geotechnical Engineering.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification as a minimum requirement.
  • Approximately 7+ years of geotechnical engineering experience, including subsurface investigations, soil borings, foundation design, and geotechnical analysis.
  • At least 2–3+ years of project leadership or project management experience in an engineering environment.
  • Demonstrated expertise in soil borings, subsurface investigations, foundation recommendations, geotechnical report preparation and review, and engineering analyses.
  • Strong project management skills, including scope management, budget management, schedule management, resource planning, and project forecasting.
  • Ability to independently review boring logs, calculations, geotechnical analyses, and engineering reports for multiple concurrent projects.
  • Experience managing project financials on a regular basis, including budget tracking, utilization reviews, revenue forecasting, WIP management, and labor tracking.
  • Proven leadership and mentorship capabilities, including delegating engineering tasks, reviewing engineer work products, coaching junior engineers, and managing project teams.
  • Strong client management skills, including leading technical discussions, presenting findings, managing client expectations, and developing solutions.
  • Excellent communication skills for direct client interaction and collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage multiple simultaneous projects in a fast-paced environment while maintaining high technical standards.
  • Local presence in Georgia or willingness to relocate to work in a hybrid, office-first environment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred, with a PE license in Georgia considered a strong asset.
  • 8–15 years of total geotechnical engineering experience, particularly for candidates currently managing projects and mentoring junior engineers.
  • Transportation project experience, including work with departments of transportation (DOT).
  • Experience with water/wastewater projects and municipal infrastructure.
  • Design-build project experience on major infrastructure initiatives.
  • Experience in deep foundations, dewatering analysis, ground improvement systems, and pavement engineering.
  • Familiarity with PDA/CAPWAP testing and analysis.
  • Experience using Deltek Vantagepoint or similar project management software.
  • Knowledge of Earned Value Management principles and practices.
  • Business development experience and strong client-facing ability, with a desire for leadership growth within a culture-driven organization.
  • Interest in influencing the future direction of a geotechnical practice and contributing to a collaborative engineering culture.

Work Environment

This role is based in a hybrid, office-first work environment with a preference for spending 4–5 days per week in the office initially to build trust and integrate with the team. Flexibility is available once strong working relationships and team integration are established. The position is primarily office-based, with frequent interaction with project teams and regular engagement with clients, contractors, and stakeholders. The culture emphasizes mentorship, collaboration, and professional development, where engineers feel heard, have direct access to leadership, and are actively developed rather than simply managed. The work is fast-paced and technically focused, combining project management responsibilities with hands-on geotechnical and client-facing work on major transportation and infrastructure projects.
