Ciam Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CIAM engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a CIAM Engineer, you need expertise in identity and access management, authentication protocols (such as SAML, OAuth, and OpenID Connect), and a strong background in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with CIAM platforms (like Okta, Auth0, ForgeRock), API integration, and relevant certifications such as CISSP or vendor-specific credentials is highly valuable. Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate complex technical information clearly are critical soft skills. These capabilities are essential for ensuring secure, seamless user access while protecting organizational data and enhancing user experiences.

What is a CIAM engineer?

A CIAM (Customer Identity and Access Management) Engineer is a technology professional responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining systems that manage customer identities, authentication, and access to online services. They ensure secure and seamless user experiences by integrating identity management solutions, such as single sign-on (SSO), multi-factor authentication (MFA), and data privacy controls. CIAM Engineers collaborate with security, development, and product teams to protect sensitive customer information and comply with regulatory requirements. Their work is critical for safeguarding customer data and enabling scalable digital services.

What is the difference between Ciam Engineer vs Data Engineer?

AspectCiam EngineerData Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires knowledge of identity management, security protocols, and sometimes certifications like CISSP or vendor-specific credentialsRequires skills in database systems, ETL processes, and certifications like AWS Certified Data Analytics or Google Cloud Professional Data Engineer
Work EnvironmentWorks mainly in identity and access management systems within IT security teamsWorks with large-scale data pipelines and databases in data teams or analytics departments
Industry UsageCommonly used in cybersecurity, SaaS, and enterprise IT sectorsCommon in tech, finance, healthcare, and any data-driven industries

The Ciam Engineer focuses on managing user identities and access security, while the Data Engineer builds and maintains data pipelines for analytics. Both roles require technical expertise but serve different functions within an organization.

What are some common challenges a CIAM engineer faces when integrating customer identity solutions with existing enterprise systems?

CIAM Engineers often encounter challenges related to integrating new identity and access management solutions with legacy systems, which may lack modern authentication protocols or standardized APIs. Ensuring a seamless user experience while maintaining robust security and compliance with data privacy regulations can also be complex. Additionally, CIAM Engineers must coordinate closely with cross-functional teams, including security, development, and customer support, to address ongoing integration issues and ensure smooth deployment and operation.

Job description

Job Title: Engineering Manager - Customer Identity & Access Management (CIAM)
Zions Bancorporation's Enterprise Technology and Operations (ETO) team is transforming what it means to work for a financial institution. With a commitment to technology and innovation, we have been providing our community, clients and colleagues the best experience possible for over 150 years. Help us lead our workforce of the future, today.
We are seeking a highly technical Engineering Manager in Salt Lake City to lead our talented Customer Identity and Access Management (CIAM) team. This team is responsible for a critical system that provides secure identity, authentication, and access management services for all our customer-facing business applications.
As the Engineering Manager, you will be at the heart of innovation at Zions Bancorporation. You will guide a team of skilled engineers, drive the technical strategy for our Java-based identity services, and lead our transition toward secure, cloud-native architectures.
What you will do:
  • Technical Leadership & Architecture: While you will not be expected to write daily production code, you must remain deeply technical. You will lead high-level architectural designs, perform critical code reviews, and guide your engineers through complex Java and system architecture challenges.
  • Cloud Modernization: Lead the cloud enablement strategy for our identity systems. You will architect the transition of legacy workflows to secure, cloud-native environments, leveraging modern practices like containerization and Infrastructure as Code (IaC).
  • CIAM Strategy: Direct the design, development, and maintenance of our CIAM platform, ensuring its reliability, security, and scalability across the enterprise.
  • Team Management: Lead, mentor, and manage a team of software engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence, secure coding practices, and continuous professional growth.
  • Strategic Collaboration: Partner with product managers, security teams, and IT leadership to define the technical roadmap and strategy for customer identity.
  • Operational Excellence: Guide the team in troubleshooting complex identity-related technical issues, provide leadership during incident response, and champion Agile/DevOps principles, including CI/CD and automated testing.

Required Qualifications:
  • 8+ years of software engineering experience, with a strong foundational background in Java development, such as Spring Boot and microservices architecture, in complex, large-scale environments.
  • 2+ years of experience in an engineering leadership or management role, with a demonstrated passion for mentoring technical talent and driving project delivery.
  • Cloud Engineering Experience: Solid understanding of cloud-native architectures, container orchestration, such as Kubernetes and Docker, and building secure, customer-facing APIs.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipeline automation and modern source code management.
  • Expertise in Identity Protocols: Knowledge of Identity and Access Management (IAM/CIAM) principles, with specific expertise in modern authentication protocols, primarily OIDC (OpenID Connect), OAuth 2.0, and SAML.
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills, with the ability to translate complex security and identity concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Skills:
  • Experience with specific enterprise identity platforms, such as Ping Identity, ForgeRock, or Auth0, is a plus, but a strong grasp of underlying protocols is more critical.
  • Experience utilizing Infrastructure as Code, such as Terraform, to automate cloud environments.
  • Experience leading AI-driven development for engineering teams.
  • Prior experience building identity solutions within financial services or other highly regulated industries.

Location:
This position has an onsite schedule with all days in the office at the new Zions Technology Center in Midvale, UT.
The Zions Technology Center is a 400,000-square-foot technology campus in Midvale, Utah. Located on the former Sharon Steel Mill superfund site, the sustainably built campus will be the company's primary technology and operations center.
