Job description

Job Title: Underwriting Manager

FLSA Status: Exempt

Job Family: Underwriting

Department: Underwriting

Location: Corporate Office (Fort Wayne, IN) (NOT REMOTE)
JOB SUMMARY
Responsible for managing, training, and developing assigned Regional Underwriting personnel. Execute directives adopted by the underwriting department and company management, so as to promote the acquisition, retention, and servicing of church and/or related ministry business consistent with company objectives. Participate in the identification, development, and implementation of policies and procedures. Profitably underwrite new and large or complex church and related ministry accounts. Develop relationships with regional agents to facilitate the production and retention of profitable business.

POSITION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage, direct, hire, evaluate, and interact with assigned underwriting personnel to ensure proper acquisition, retention, and servicing of church and/or related ministry business.
  • Direct the training and development of assigned underwriting personnel on established underwriting guidelines, policies, and procedures.
  • Audit underwriting performed by assigned underwriting personnel by regularly examining underwriting files for compliance with established standards, including compliance with state and federal regulations relating to underwriting.
  • Communicate to assigned underwriting personnel changes in underwriting practices and procedures or other issues involving the underwriting function.
  • Contribute to departmental or interdepartmental projects or processes that relate to the underwriting function.
  • Co-direct the company’s marketing and underwriting efforts with the regional sales manager and participate in agency management by providing input relative to agency performance.
  • Report any marketplace or customer trends that may positively or negatively impact the company and/or its target niche to company and executive management.
  • Participate in agency and prospective and existing policyholder visitations.
  • Assist company management in resolving policyholder and agency disputes, answering insurance inquiries, and developing the annual budget and strategic goals for the department.
  • Monitor legal and insurance environment trends in assigned territory; report to company management as appropriate.
  • Ensure accurate placement of reinsurance so as not to overexpose the company’s surplus to risk.
  • Identify, evaluate and develop underwriting staff with potential for managerial positions.
  • Complete other projects as assigned.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

  • Must have a Bachelor’s degree.
  • Must have AU or other insurance-related designation.
  • Must have five or more years of underwriting technical experience or equivalent/transferable experience.
  • CPCU, CIC, ARM, ARe or similar designation is desired.
  • Minimum seven years of experience in Property and Casualty insurance underwriting is desired.
  • Minimum three years of supervisory experience is desired.
  • Experience in building construction and/or valuation, and in property/casualty risk management, is desired.
