What is a church preschool?

A church preschool is an early childhood education program operated by or affiliated with a church. These programs typically offer care and learning experiences for children ages 2 to 5, focusing on social, emotional, and cognitive development in a nurturing, faith-based environment. In addition to teaching basic academic skills, church preschools often incorporate religious values and teachings into their curriculum. Many families choose church preschools for their community atmosphere and emphasis on character development.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a church preschool teacher?

To thrive as a Church Preschool Teacher, you need early childhood education knowledge, child development understanding, and typically a relevant degree or certification such as a CDA or state teaching credential. Familiarity with classroom management software, curriculum planning tools, and basic first aid is often required. Patience, creativity, and strong communication skills help foster a nurturing and engaging environment for young children. These qualifications ensure a safe, supportive, and enriching learning experience aligned with both educational and faith-based values.

What are some common challenges faced when working in a church preschool setting?

Working in a church preschool often involves balancing educational responsibilities with nurturing children's spiritual development in a faith-based environment. Staff may face challenges such as accommodating diverse family backgrounds, managing classroom behavior in accordance with both educational and religious guidelines, and communicating effectively with parents about both academic and faith-related activities. Additionally, resources and budgets can be more limited than in larger institutions, requiring creativity and flexibility from staff. However, the close-knit, supportive community and opportunities to build meaningful relationships with families are rewarding aspects of the role.

As Kids Life continues to grow, Lakewood Church is expanding our ministry to include midweek Wednesday services, creating more opportunities to pour into children during these early, foundational years.

We are seeking patient, loving, and Christ-centered individuals who enjoy teaching, comforting, and guiding preschool-age children in a safe, joyful, and faith-filled environment.

As a Preschool Teacher, you’ll primarily serve children from age three through five years/Kindergarten, helping introduce them to God’s love through engaging classroom ministry, age-appropriate teaching, encouragement, and care.

Compensation

  • Part-time, 12 to 20 hours per pay period
  • Sunday 7:30 a.m.- 2 p.m. and Wednesday 6:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m.
  • Additional hours may be available for special events as needed

What You’ll Do

Working directly with the Preschool Manager, you’ll help create a safe, welcoming, and engaging ministry environment where preschool-age children can learn, participate, and grow.

  • Primarily serve children from age three through five years/Kindergarten while remaining flexible to assist with children of other ages or in different ministry roles as needed

Create a Safe & Positive Classroom Experience

  • Follow established Child Safety and Emergency protocols in accordance with Lakewood Church policies and applicable requirements
  • Help children transition successfully between activities and classroom environments
  • Respond appropriately and positively to challenging behaviors
  • Model a Christ-like attitude in interactions with children, parents, volunteers, staff, and leaders
  • Help ensure children, parents, Kids Life staff, and volunteers have a positive experience
  • Maintain professionalism, discretion, and a Christ-like attitude when handling sensitive or confidential information

Serve as Part of the Kids Life Team

  • Work cooperatively with Kids Life staff, volunteers, coordinators, and ministry leaders
  • Look for opportunities to assist with classroom transitions, additional duties, and team needs
  • Encourage and inspire volunteer commitment in others
  • Maintain a cooperative and respectful attitude
  • Remain gracious, kind, and loving even in high-pressure situations
  • Be open to correction and responsive to volunteer and staff leadership
  • Maintain flexibility when classroom assignment changes are needed

Be Prepared & Dependable

  • Arrive in assigned areas on time, prepared, and ready to serve
  • Maintain a high level of dependability and reliability for assigned work schedules
  • Communicate schedule changes promptly with the Preschool Manager, Coordinator, Team Lead, and other appropriate staff
  • Complete assigned paperwork and classroom clean-up
  • Attend Kids Life team meetings, staff meetings, and area trainings
  • Maintain availability for regular ministry days, including Sundays and Wednesdays, and for special events as needed
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Qualifications

Our Mission

As a member of the Lakewood Church team, you play an important role in helping fulfill our mission of bringing hope through Jesus Christ to people around the world.

Employees serving in this position are expected to support the Church’s mission, maintain a lifestyle consistent with our biblical beliefs, participate in the life of the Church, and serve as part of our faith community.
