Job description

MISSION STATEMENT: The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part

POSITION TITLE: Truck Driver (Non-CDL/DOT)
DEPARTMENT: The Salvation Army; Fairbanks Corps
REPORTS TO: Corps Officers
FLSA STATUS: Full-Time / 40 hours per week; Non-Exempt

SCOPE OF POSITION: The Truck Driver is responsible for the safety and security of trucks and
equipment, and the safe handling of all goods and materials. This position also assists with
marking and moving merchandise in the day-to-day operations of the warehouse.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Ability to carry out oral and written instructions with minimum supervision.
2. Licensed according to State of Alaska requirements to operate trucks such as used by The Salvation Army
3. Ability to read map books, plan routes, and use a two-way radio.
4. Skilled in providing excellent customer service by giving prompt and courteous assistance to internal and external customers.
5. Current Alaska driver’s license with acceptable driving and criminal history records.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. Plan daily routing based on store drop offs of processed material.
2. Provide daily inspections of trucks, checking air, water, oil and other items to ensure equipment is clean and well maintained.
3. Assist with onloading and offloading of merchandise.
4. Work in cooperation with the Thrift Store Manager to assist with production needs including receiving, sorting, pricing, and stocking sales floor as needed.
5. Operate Salvation Army Vehicle to pick up donations, load trash and unsellable merchandise and take to the Fairbanks Dump, and keep the vehicle cleaned and
serviced.
6. Act as a Salvation Army representative ensuring that customers are always treated courteously.
7. Help to ensure warehouse/thrift store cleanliness inside and out.
8. Assist with making and loading recycle bales.
9. Assist with the loss prevention program, reporting all incidents of loss to management in a timely manner.
10. Report safety hazards; assist in the protection of property, vehicles, and buildings.
11. Instruct, supervise, and assist any ride-along assistant when loading and unloading merchandise, exhibiting that good work habits are taught by example as well as by instruction.
12. Perform other related duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Speaking, sitting, bending, walking, pushing, pulling, standing, kneeling, stooping, reaching, handling, fingering, climbing, and balancing. Hearing and visual acuity must be within normal limits. Lifting and moving objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Driving a motor vehicle. Qualified individuals must be able to perform the essential duties of the position with or without accommodation. A qualified person with a disability may request a modification or adjustment to the job or work environment in order to meet the physical requirements of the position. The Salvation Army will attempt to satisfy requests if the accommodation needed is reasonable and no undue hardship would result.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed both inside a warehouse environment and outside in loading and unloading trucks. Occasional exposure to extremely cold temperatures and wet conditions. Noise level is generally low to medium. Personal protective equipment will be worn as is required in the site’s Hazard Communication Program.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Must be able to understand, follow and give both written and oral instructions and be comfortable working with diverse individuals in face-to-face contact and over the telephone. The employee must be able to use speech and hearing for ordinary and telephone conversation.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Must be able to perform simple calculations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) and apply concepts such as ratios and percentages in practical situations.

PERFORMANCE SKILLS: Must be punctual, organized, self-motivated, flexible, and possess a desire to learn and assist those he/she interacts with.

PROTECT THE MISSION: Must complete the online course for this area and pass the Background Checks required by The Salvation Army for employment.

DRIVING REQUIREMENT: Must be a licensed driver with acceptable driving history. Must also complete and pass The Salvation Army Driver Safety Course.
