About Christ Episcopal Church

Christ Episcopal Church is a historic, vibrant, and welcoming parish located in the heart of Ballston Spa. We are a loving community of faith dedicated to worship, fellowship, and service. Our beautiful, historic English Gothic building is not just our worship home, but a gathering space for our parish family and local community. We are seeking a dependable, self-motivated, and respectful Church Sexton to care for our sacred spaces and ensure our facilities are clean, safe, and ready for ministry.

Job Summary

The Church Sexton is responsible for the general cleanliness, basic maintenance, security, and setup of the church buildings and grounds. This role works under the general supervision of the Rector (Pastor) and the Junior Warden (Property Chair) to support the weekly life of the parish, including Sunday services, special events, and seasonal projects.

Key Responsibilities

1. Cleaning & Facility Upkeep

  • Perform weekly light cleaning of the sanctuary, chapel, parish hall, offices, classrooms, kitchen, and restrooms (vacuuming, dusting, mopping, trash removal, and surface sanitizing).
  • Ensure restrooms and kitchen spaces are fully stocked with paper products and cleaning supplies.
  • Monitor cleaning/maintenance supply inventory and request orders when stock is low.

2. Grounds and Security

  • Assist with upkeep of church grounds, including litter removal, minor landscaping, and seasonal maintenance.
  • Coordinate lawn care and snow removal services.
  • Ensure buildings are secured when not in use, including locking doors and windows and turning off unnecessary lights and equipment.

3. Simple Maintenance & Repairs

  • Perform minor repairs and handy-person tasks (e.g., replacing lightbulbs, tightening loose screws, paint touch-ups).
  • Regularly inspect safety equipment (smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, electrical panel) and keep an eye out for issues that require professional contractors.
  • Assist with minor seasonal tasks (e.g., keeping walkways clear of light snow/ice in the winter, sweeping the entranceways).

4. Sunday & Event Setup

  • Prepare the parish hall and meeting rooms for Sunday coffee hour, vestry meetings, and parish events (setting up tables and chairs).
  • Provide logistical support for special services, including funerals, weddings, and holy seasons (Lent, Easter, Christmas).

5. Administration

  • Coordinate inspections for insurance, safety, code compliance, and pest control.
  • Order maintenance supplies and track facility-related expenses.
  • Assist with facilities planning and annual budgeting.
  • Coordinate parish workdays and serve as the primary contact for facilities contractors.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Experience: Previous experience in custodian work, janitorial services, facilities upkeep, or general property maintenance is highly preferred.
  • Skills: Basic handyperson skills (understanding of simple tools, basic repairs).
  • Physical Ability: Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, climb a ladder safely, and perform physical tasks (bending, lifting, sweeping).
  • Reliability: High level of dependability, punctuality, and the ability to work independently without constant direct supervision.
  • Character: Respectful demeanor appropriate for working in a church environment. Must maintain positive, helpful communication with staff, volunteers, and parishioners.
  • Background Check: Must successfully pass a background check and be willing to complete the Episcopal Church's "Safe Church, Safe Communities" online safety training module.
