What is a CHOP CNA?

Chop CNAs are Certified Nursing Assistants who work at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). They provide essential patient care under the supervision of registered nurses, helping with daily activities such as bathing, feeding, and monitoring vital signs. Chop CNAs play a crucial role in supporting the well-being of pediatric patients and assisting families during hospital stays. They are trained to work specifically with children and must have strong communication and compassion skills. Becoming a CHOP CNA typically requires state certification and sometimes prior experience in pediatric care.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a CHOP CNA?

To thrive as a CHOP CNA, you need a solid understanding of basic patient care, infection control, and vital signs monitoring, usually supported by a high school diploma and state-approved CNA certification. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR) systems and pediatric medical equipment is typically required. Compassion, patience, and strong teamwork are vital soft skills for supporting young patients and collaborating with pediatric healthcare teams. These skills ensure safe, compassionate, and effective care tailored to the unique needs of children in a hospital environment.

What are common challenges faced by a CHOP CNA in a pediatric healthcare setting?

As a CHOP CNA (Children's Hospital of Philadelphia Certified Nursing Assistant), you may encounter unique challenges such as communicating effectively with young patients and their families, managing emotional stress when caring for critically ill children, and adapting to the fast-paced environment of a top pediatric hospital. Additionally, collaborating closely with multidisciplinary teams—including nurses, physicians, and child life specialists—requires strong teamwork and adaptability. These experiences can be both demanding and rewarding, offering valuable opportunities for professional development in pediatric care.
