Job description

The City of Topeka's Public Works department is seeking a licensed professional engineer to serve as its Traffic Engineer. This position is responsible for managing safe and efficient traffic flow movement within the City and supports the department's commitment to enhancing the quality of life for its residents through the effective management of public infrastructure and services.
What you'll do:
  • Coordinate with contractors, developers, City staff and outside agencies in relation to traffic disruptions, traffic studies, and traffic management.
  • Review and approve traffic control, detour, and pavement marking plans.
  • Manage the full lifecycle of traffic projects, include plan preparation, budgeting, and inspection.
  • Respond to inquiries from citizens.

The ideal candidate is:
  • A strategic thinker with the ability to analyze complex problems and make sound decisions.

  • Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Knowledgeable of traffic engineering principles, practices and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in civil engineering or a related field is required.
  • Must possess a Professional Engineer (PE) license in the State of Kansas. If the license is from another state, must obtain a Kansas license within six months.
  • Five years of engineering experience is required after obtaining the PE license, with at least two years as a project manager and supervisor.
  • Three to five years of engineering experience in traffic operations, including planning, design, construction and operations.
  • Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) certification is preferred.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Kansas driver's license and must be insurable within the standards set by the City of Topeka's insurance carrier.
