What is a chip design?

A Chip Design job involves creating and developing semiconductor circuits used in electronic devices. Engineers in this field work on designing, verifying, and testing integrated circuits (ICs) to ensure performance, power efficiency, and reliability. They use specialized software tools for designing hardware and optimizing functionality. Chip designers collaborate with cross-functional teams to bring new processors, memory chips, or custom ASICs from concept to production. This role is crucial in industries like computing, telecommunications, and consumer electronics.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in chip design?

To excel in Chip Design, a strong background in electrical engineering, digital and analog circuit design, and semiconductor physics is typically required, often supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with electronic design automation (EDA) tools like Cadence, Synopsys, and Mentor Graphics, as well as proficiency in hardware description languages (HDLs) such as Verilog or VHDL, are standard prerequisites. Outstanding problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate closely with cross-functional teams set candidates apart. These competencies are essential for designing efficient, reliable integrated circuits and meeting the evolving needs of the semiconductor industry.

What are the typical career progression opportunities in chip design?

Chip Design offers a clear pathway for career growth, starting from entry-level positions such as Design Engineer or Verification Engineer and progressing to roles like Lead Designer, Project Manager, or Technical Architect. As you gain experience and demonstrate expertise, opportunities often open up in specialized areas such as physical design, timing analysis, or system architecture. Many professionals also advance to leadership or managerial positions, overseeing teams or entire design projects. Additionally, working in such a fast-evolving field keeps you engaged with the latest technologies and can provide options to transition into adjacent areas like product management or application engineering.

How much do chip designers make?

Chip designers, also known as integrated circuit designers, typically earn between $80,000 and $150,000 annually, depending on experience, education, and location. Senior roles or those with specialized skills in hardware description languages and CAD tools can earn higher salaries, often exceeding $200,000.

How to get a job in chip design?

To get a job in chip design, candidates typically need a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a related field, along with strong skills in digital and analog circuit design, hardware description languages like VHDL or Verilog, and familiarity with CAD tools. Gaining experience through internships, projects, or research can improve employability, and advanced roles may require a master's or Ph.D. in a relevant area. Certifications in specific design tools or methodologies can also enhance prospects.

Is chip design a good career?

Chip design is a specialized field within electrical engineering focused on developing integrated circuits and microprocessors. It offers high demand, competitive salaries, and opportunities for innovation, often requiring skills in hardware description languages and familiarity with CAD tools. Career growth depends on technical expertise and industry experience.

Job description

Role Overviewย

As a Senior Digital Design Engineer, you will design and integrate high-performance connectivity silicon for the next generation of AI infrastructure. You will contribute across architecture, micro-architecture, RTL implementation, synthesis, timing closure, and IP integration for PCIe and Ethernet controllers, bridges, switches, and related SerDes interfaces.ย

You will work with cross-functional teams to turn complex connectivity requirements into robust, production-ready designs. Your work will span block-level and full-chip development at advanced process nodes and help enable reliable, high-bandwidth connections among CPUs, GPUs, memory, storage, and networking devices in rack-scale AI systems. You will help improve product quality, accelerate time to market, and strengthen customer confidence in every release.ย

Key Responsibilitiesย

  • Digital Architecture and RTL Implementationย
  • Develop micro-architecture and implement synthesizable RTL for high-performance PCIe or Ethernet controllers, bridges, switches, and SerDes-related IP.ย
  • Translate architecture and protocol requirements into scalable designs using SystemVerilog and Verilog.ย
  • Own block-level and full-chip design deliverables from specification through implementation and GDS handoff.ย
  • Contribute to designs at advanced process nodes of 16 nm or smaller, including PCIe Gen 6/7, UALink, or UCI-based connectivity where applicable.ย
  • Integration, Timing, and Design Qualityย
  • Integrate controller, SerDes, processor, peripheral, and other IP while partnering with RTL, physical design, DFT, verification, and firmware teams.ย
  • Drive synthesis, timing analysis, timing closure, clock-domain crossing, lint, and design-quality reviews.ย
  • Support gate-level simulation, emulation, and pre-silicon and post-silicon design implementation activities.ย
  • Contribute to top-level integration, floor-planning discussions, PAD planning, and DFT implementation.ย
  • Cross-Functional Execution and Debugย
  • Collaborate with verification and system teams to assess verification completeness, debug design issues, and close implementation gaps.ย
  • Partner with firmware and embedded software teams to define and validate hardware-software interfaces.ย
  • Use Synopsys and Cadence design and analysis tools, along with Python or Perl scripting, to improve design productivity and automation.ย
  • Communicate technical status, risks, and tradeoffs clearly while managing multiple priorities with appropriate ownership and urgency.ย

Basic Qualificationsย

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a related field.ย
  • 2 - 5 years of experience in digital design and implementation for complex SoC or silicon products.ย
  • Hands-on experience developing RTL in SystemVerilog or Verilog, including synthesis and timing closure.ย
  • Experience with PCIe or Ethernet controller, bridge, switch, PCS, PHY, or SerDes design and IP integration.ย
  • Experience with front-end design, gate-level simulation, clock-domain crossing, lint, or related design-quality methodologies.ย
  • Experience using Python or Perl to automate design, integration, or analysis workflows.ย
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across design, verification, physical design, DFT, firmware, and system teams.ย
  • Authorized to work in Canada.ย

Preferred Qualificationsย

  • Experience with PCIe or Ethernet SerDes controller or IP-level design, including PCIe Gen 6/7, UALink, or UCI.ย
  • Experience with block-level and full-chip implementation at advanced process nodes of 16 nm or smaller.ย
  • Knowledge of PAD design, DFT, floor planning, and top-level integration.ย
  • Experience developing NIC, switch, storage, or other high-performance connectivity products with embedded firmware interaction.ย
