Job Description

Library Assistant – Youth Services & Outreach for the Jamesburg Public Library

Position Summary

The Library Assistant – Youth Services & Outreach is a part-time position that supports daily operations of a public library while assisting with youth programming and community outreach. This role combines front-line customer service responsibilities with active support of programs and services for children, teens, and families.

The position requires flexibility, including availability for evening and weekend shifts. The ideal candidate is comfortable working in a busy public environment, enjoys working with children and families, and is proficient in the use of technology to support both patron services and programming needs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Provide courteous and efficient service at circulation desk

• Check materials in/out; register patrons; process holds, returns, renewals, and interlibrary loans

• Shelve, organize, and maintain library collections in assigned areas

• Assist patrons with locating materials, readers advisory, and use of library resources

• Provide technology assistance to patrons, including help with computers and personal devices, printers, internet access, and digital library resources

• Support planning, preparation, facilitation, and cleanup of programs and events

• Prepare program materials, supplies, displays, and promotional items

• Assist with outreach efforts, including school visits, community events, and promotional activities

• Create graphics and promotional materials to highlight events and library services

• Create and manage engaging content for the library’s social media platforms

• Contribute to maintaining welcoming, organized, and engaging youth services spaces

• Perform general clerical tasks and assist with special projects as assigned

Qualifications

• High school diploma is required, and some college coursework is preferred.

• Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to connect authentically with diverse populations.

• Strong computer skills are essential, including the ability to learn new software quickly, troubleshoot basic problems, and use a variety of programs and online tools independently. Must be comfortable using Canva, Google Workspace, MS Office, and managing social media accounts.

• Ability to bend, push, reach, and lift up to 25 lbs.

Schedule Requirements

This is a part-time position not to exceed 30 hrs./week. Schedule may vary and will include evenings and weekends based on library needs and programming schedules.

Salary: $16.25/hr.
